Position DetailsPosition InformationPosition Title Remote Sensing Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Wild Blueberry EcophysiologyPosting Number PTAP1607PDepartment/Unit Plant, Food and Envir SciencesLocation TruroJob Summary & Key ResponsibilitiesThe Wild Blueberry Research Program is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to lead remote sensing research focusing on the assessment of population structure, phenology, and pest pressures. The project will combine the next generation of high-throughput drone-based phenotyping platforms and plant ecophysiological approaches to understand the wild blueberry growth and development dynamics and resilience to climate change impacts.The positions are part of an interdisciplinary project with researchers from Dalhousie University, the Arctic University of Norway, the Canadian Wild Blueberry Industry Research and Development Institute, the wild blueberry producer associations of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, and the Bragg Group of Food Companies.Under the supervision of Dr. David Percival, the postdoctoral research fellow will take the lead on using the data acquired from unmanned aerial vehicle systems equipped with LiDar, multispectral, and high resolution RGB sensors from wild blueberry fields in Atlantic Canada. Emphasis will be placed on developing models of the population structure (phenotypes), growth and development (phenology), and the incidence and severity of pest pressures including weed pressures, diseases, and insect infestation in wild blueberry fields. Investigative research will also proceed examining the relationship between adaptive traits and resilience to climate change. Opportunities for additional projects of particular interest to the candidate are available. The researcher is expected to conduct statistical analysis and summarize data in a timely and efficient manner, interpret the findings within the context of the ecosystem, and present results in peer reviewed journals and professional conferences. The researcher will also have the opportunity to work with the lab to develop and deliver extension materials to wild blueberry industry and producers and collaborate with researchers at other research institutions on related projects.   • Please note that Postdoctoral Fellowships at Dalhousie can be held for a maximum of 6 years following the completion of a PhD.
  • The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or a related field. Strong background in advanced bioinformatics, statistical genomics, and model-data integration is required.
  • Experience with plant biology, molecular ecology, genomic selection models and machine learning algorithms is an asset.
  • Additional desired skills include excellent verbal and written skills, accountability, and outstanding problem solving skills. This individual will be involved with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and must be able to work alone as well as part of an interdisciplinary group.
