This position’s primary responsibility is to support UBC Okanagan Food Services by providing nutritional support, communication and guidance to students.Organizational StatusReports to the Associate Director, Food Services (UBC Okanagan). Works closely with Nutrition Department (UBC Vancouver) to facilitate consistency within the System. A key member of the Food Services Okanagan leadership team working closely with the Executive Chef, Retail Food Services Manager, Residence Dining Manager and the Communications and Marketing specialist. This position also works with all Student Housing and Community Services staff, students living in residence, and a number of other departments and faculties within the broader UBC community.Work PerformedStrategic Leadership

  • Leads the development and implementation of SHCS-wide initiatives related to food, nutrition and health.
  • Develops and implements evidence-based nutrition education and health promotion initiatives to enrich student learning and health, with a focus on the first year experience.
  • Positions UBC Okanagan Food Services as a leader in health promotion, including working with other departments on various projects and initiatives, and creating/maintaining partnerships with others working in health promotion at Okanagan campus.
  • Works closely with the culinary and purchasing teams on menu planning and sourcing better products and ingredients that align with our UBC Okanagan Food Services Food Vision and Values.
Training and Development
  • Develops evidence-based educational materials and workshops for students & staff on a variety of topics focused on health and wellbeing.
  • Develops and organizes wellbeing programs for students & staff that enhance overall health and promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to facilitate programs, workshops, communications and other initiatives related to student & staff wellbeing.
  • In collaboration with the Marketing & Communications team, creates marketing materials to promote wellbeing services and programs.
  • Works with the Residence Life team to enhance connection to students and promote wellbeing services and programs.
  • Provides education and guidance to culinary teams regarding menu and recipe nutrition.
  • Facilitates training for food service teams regarding procedures for dealing with food allergies and communication.
Operational and Administrative Responsibilities
  • Provides confidential one-on-one counselling with residents via a variety of channels, including email, phone, and in-person, regarding topics including but not limited to: Nutrition counselling for weight related issues, disordered eating, restrictive or modified diets due to intolerances or allergies, vegan and vegetarian diets, sports nutrition, and positive body image.
  • Works with campus Health and Wellness department to initiate consults and medical interventions as required.
  • Analyzes menus and recipes to determine nutritional values.
  • Thoroughly reviews recipe ingredients and sub-ingredients to identify food allergens in recipes and ensure all the priority allergens are labeled correctly.
  • Works closely with the Marketing & Communications team on nutrition communication projects and tasks including maintaining, updating and creating content for blogs, websites and social media channels.
  • Collaborates with the Optimum Control Team and Purchasing Team regarding the OC System and troubleshoots and makes decisions regarding nutritional data.
  • Performs data input and maintenance of nutrition information in Optimum Control system for Okanagan campus ensuring accuracy.
  • Responsible for creating accurate nutrition labels to display at point of purchase and online nutrition information, including ingredients, allergens, icons, and nutrition facts.
  • Represents SHCS for UBC Okanagan Wellbeing.
  • Collaborates with Faculties and Research initiatives as appropriate.
  • Identifies and works on other nutrition related projects as required.

Poor judgment, decision-making, and/or errors could also involve legal and/or financial liability for the University and could have a damaging impact on the credibility and reputation of the Department and University.Supervision ReceivedReports to the Associate Director, Food Services at the Okanagan campus under broad objectives with minimal supervision.Supervision GivenWork learn students or volunteers (as applicable/if needed).Preferred Qualifications
  • University degree with a background in health, wellness, education or nutrition.
  • Registered Dietitian in good standing with The College of Dietitians of BC is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of recent related experience, including working with students and providing nutritional counselling.
  • Time management and organizational skills, ability to think critically, attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing health & wellbeing programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with various levels of staff, students and the general public.
  • Self-directed with ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
