Job Description

Company:Chinook Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing precision medicines for kidney diseases. Chinook’s product candidates are being investigated in rare, severe chronic kidney disorders with opportunities for well-defined clinical pathways. Chinook’s lead program is atrasentan, a phase 3 endothelin receptor antagonist for the treatment of IgA nephropathy and other proteinuric glomerular diseases. BION-1301, an anti-APRIL monoclonal antibody is being evaluated in a phase 1b trial for IgA nephropathy. In addition, Chinook is advancing CHK-336, an oral small molecule LDHA inhibitor for the treatment of primary hyperoxaluria, as well as research programs for other rare, severe chronic kidney diseases.Chinook is building its pipeline by leveraging insights in kidney single cell RNA sequencing, human-derived organoids, and new translational models, to discover and develop therapeutics with differentiating mechanisms of action against key kidney disease pathways. Chinook trades on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol KDNY and has locations in Vancouver, BC, Seattle, WA and Oakland, CA.Position:The Animal Care Technician will support the in vivo pharmacology team at our vivarium situated in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. The successful candidate will perform skilled animal husbandry functions involving the care and welfare of research rodents as well as assisting with the cleaning and maintenance of the vivarium. The ideal candidate will also gain exposure supporting multiple aspects of vivarium operations, as well as assisting with in vivo studies. The Animal Care Technician will rely on their organizational skills and expertise to manage multiple vivarium responsibilities simultaneously. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with the pharmacology team as well as other functional groups in a dynamic environment.Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform and document daily animal health checks to assess animal behavior and well-being; identify and report animal illnesses or abnormalities as directed.
  • Perform husbandry activities including routine cage prep and changes; providing appropriate feed and water; receiving and separating animals; handling, restraining, weighing; providing appropriate health treatments; and determining daily animal census.
  • Routine cleaning and washing of metabolic caging systems; includes disinfection of cage racks and numerous caging components
  • Sanitize and/or disinfect the vivarium including benchtops, floors, walls, and other relevant surfaces; perform general custodial duties within the vivarium (e.g., sweep and mop hallways, transport waste materials); appropriately dispose of animal carcasses and dirty caging components.
  • Maintain up to date laboratory inventory, including animals, caging, food, and general lab supplies.
  • In a team setting, perform dosing, injections, and sample collections from rats and mice
  • Assist study directors with study randomization, preparation of lab materials, and data entry using software such as Excel and SoftMouse.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as study schedules dictate.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive team-focused company culture.
Education, Experience and Skills:
  • High school diploma required; an AHT degree or B.Sc. degree is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are essential.
  • In vivo experience with research rodents is an asset.
  • Experience with routine injections (SC, IP, IV), dosing (PO), and collection of blood, urine and tissue samples from rats and mice is considered an asset.
  • Able to follow SOPs and lab safety guidelines, keep accurate records and manage multiple simultaneous tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Desire to learn new skill sets as the company grows.
