Orato World Media is in search of an Assistant Managing Editor for hire immediately. The position will report to the Managing Editor (ME) with a dotted line to the leadership team, including the CEO and Publisher, for special projects. Strong preference will be given to candidates with superior English editing skills, who are also bilingual in another language. The position will work collaboratively with the Orato staff and administrators, editors, foreign correspondents, freelance journalists, photographers, videographers, and illustrators to support the story incubation and publication process and maintain quality assurance for all published works. This is a full-time contract position subject to renewal. The assistant editor will be hired immediately to train with the managing editor in order to lead the editorial process during maternity leave. Upon the managing editor’s return, the assistant editor will continue to fully support the editorial process while helping to build an archive of stories, obtain stories in other languages, and write some of their own stories.About Orato World MediaOrato is Latin for I Speak’ and we publish stories in the words of the individual who has experienced the actual newsworthy event by publishing true stories from and about real people. With 18 to 44-year-olds comprising our fastest-growing audience and the largest percentage of our contributors, Orato IS the voice of a new generation of reporters giving a voice to the voiceless in a sea of misinformation.Responsibilities:Works alongside the ME to execute the story publication operation using primary software such as Airtable, WordPress, DocuSign, Hootsuite, MailChimp, and pertinent plug-ins.Collaborates with the web developer and staff when technical issues and opportunities arise.Ensures a seamless ‘story incubation’ process using established automated web forms that integrate with Airtable (pitch a story, submit a story, freelancer assessment).Vets all story pitches in their non-English language, ensuring accepted stories firmly meet Orato’s story mandate which includes a defined set of qualifications and verification; and supports the pitch process alongside the ME.Together with other Orato editors, translators, and editorial support staff, reviews story drafts submits clarification questions to writers and contributors, edits, updates, and schedules stories for final publication.Translates stories to English as necessary.Ensures stories contain the appropriate quality and amount of multimedia assets, and story backgrounds and that the subject biographies are thorough and add newsworthiness and supplemental information to stories.Transitions stories from Airtable to WordPress using a step-by-step established process, meeting all formatting standards for the public website.Serves as a backup in managing the DocuSign process to establish agreements with contributors on assignments and pay structures; works together with staff to ensure timely submission of publishable content and payment requests for contributors.Maintains high-quality communication with writers, photographers, videographers, and illustrators, fostering goodwill and recognizing that they are our allies by treating them as “VIPs” and resolving problems with a goal of positive engagement experiences with Orato World Media.Regularly interviews subjects and writes stories for Orato World Media to maintain a personal connection with the processes and procedures that impact contributors.Qualifications for the positionThe selected candidate must have a baccalaureate degree in journalism or a related field of study, three to five years of experience in the media industry preferably in editorial support or as a journalist, and have very high quality oral and written skills in both English and their second language. The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have strong skills in managing people in an editorial process, as this role interacts extensively with journalists and contributors from around the world. Demonstration of good relationships with colleagues vertically and horizontally in organizations will appeal to the hiring process. Preference will be given to individuals who have managed journalists and editorial processes. Experience growing start-ups or expanding programs (illustrating demonstrated outcomes) will strengthen the candidacy.Job Type: Full-timeQuick Apply
