The CLC offers academic co-curricular programs, study spaces, equipment lending, and access to specialized technology and lab spaces to help UBC Sauder students achieve academic success and develop career-ready skills.The Canaccord Learning Commons Manager is responsible for the strategy, vision, implementation and evaluation of co-curricular academic support programs and services for the faculty. This includes maintaining current and comprehensive knowledge of undergraduate and graduate business students needs, as well as the ability to parse information from multiple stakeholders and make thoughtful, intentional decisions about programming and services that align with and enhance both the UBC Sauders and the UBC Librarys strategic plans. This position requires a strong understanding of the undergraduate and graduate student learning experience, educational pedagogy and instructional design, and student development and support strategies.Organizational StatusReports to the Head, David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons; is part of the units leadership team, contributing directly to the development of unit-wide policies and strategic priorities. This position manages a team of professional (M&P, CUPE, and contract) and student employees. The CLC Manager works closely and collaboratively with colleagues within the unit, and with senior-level managers across the UBC Sauder School of Business including the Deans Office, the Undergraduate Office, the Robert H. Lee Graduate School, the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre, and Learning Services.The incumbent liaises with colleagues in other UBC Library branches, especially the Chapman Learning Commons at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, and represents the Library and Learning Commons on faculty and cross campus committees and working groups as needed. This position develops strong relationships and regularly works in collaboration with managers and administrators across the University, particularly the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers, the Centre for Accessibility, the Equity and Inclusion Office, and student engagement staff across UBCs Faculties and Schools. The Manager works with considerable autonomy.Work Performed

  • Develops, implements, and assesses annual strategic goals and targets for the Canaccord Learning Commons, with consideration to the UBC Sauder and UBC Library strategic plans. Creates comprehensive annual reports and contributes to internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Takes a leadership role in shared David Lam Library/Learning Commons initiatives and contributes to strategic planning, operations, and delivery of services.
  • Identifies undergraduate and graduate student needs through review of internal assessment and usage data, institutional data, current academic literature, and open communication with UBC Sauders Undergraduate Office, RHL Graduate School, Business Career Centre, and Learning Services.
  • Develops, refines, manages, and evaluates programs, spaces, and services that support co-curricular student learning and/or skill development.
  • Makes independent and collaborative decisions regarding policies and procedures that impact programs, services, and operational needs of the unit. Participates in the communication, implementation, and moderation of new and existing policies and procedures.
  • Manages the Learning Commons budget and long-term financial planning. Allocates funds and resources based on needs, unit goals, and strategic priorities.
  • Manages professional staff and student employees - including recruitment, training, coaching, evaluation, and, if necessary, termination. Directs work of Learning Commons team and provides guidance to DLam colleagues as required.
  • Evaluates needs and implements programming to target specific student populations, including students learning English as an additional language, students in academically high-risk courses, and students at risk of discontinuing their studies.
  • Provides oversight to the operation and delivery of services in the Learning Commons specialty lab spaces.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with UBC Sauder faculty members and service units, the Commerce Undergraduate Society, UBC Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication, Chapman Learning Commons, other UBC Library branches, and UBC Student Development units including the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers, the Equity and Inclusion Office, the Centre for Community Engaged Learning, and the Centre for Accessibility.
  • Participates in and represents the unit on university committees, task forces, and working groups as required.
  • May act for Head as needed.

Consequence of Error/JudgementMakes recommendations and decisions regarding the design, management and effective delivery of programs and services to ensure University-wide and faculty-specific student learning and development objectives are met. Decisions have an impact on relationships and initiatives within the UBC Sauder School of Business, the UBC Library and across the University. Inability to work cooperatively with students, staff and/or faculty would jeopardize the effective provision of programs and services. Poor management of staff may lead to inefficiency, discontent, or grievances. Errors in budgetary oversight could cause unnecessarily increased costs. Poor decision-making or judgement could compromise the integrity and/or the reputation of the UBC Sauder and UBC.Supervision ReceivedWorks under the general direction of the Head, David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons and provides regular updates to/receives some strategic direction from the UBC Sauder Deans Office. The position requires significant autonomy and functions with minimal direct supervision.Supervision GivenDirectly responsible for all professional staff in the Canaccord Learning Commons; M&P, CUPE 2950, and contract staff. Oversees the work of student employees and is indirectly accountable for students supervised by direct reports.Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Experience in student services or student engagement-focused role(s), preferably working with undergraduate and/or graduate learners. Previous experience supporting/working with faculty members is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and evaluate evidence-based programs and services.
  • Previous experience developing, managing, and measuring effective co-curricular student programming.
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Ability to take initiative in learning about language and issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to model tactful, effective communication through active listening and appreciative inquiry and is open to providing and receiving timely, constructive feedback. Ability to make thoughtful decisions and effectively communicate these decisions to colleagues and students.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships and engage in a respectful workplace culture.

  • Supervisory experience with a proven ability to effectively lead, motivate, coach, train, and manage performance of professional and student staff.
  • Knowledge of University systems, processes, policies and decision-making structures is an asset.
