The position supports faculty, students and staff who design and develop emerging media tools and techniques including but not limited to virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), video games, geographic information systems (GIS), and digital curation. We seek candidates with experience working collaboratively with communities to facilitate and guide them in the use of new media and digital technologies. This position will contribute to the development of research in community-centred technological development in areas including mapping, gaming, and curation/exhibit design. The developer will be an active participant in research initiatives, including writing and publishing.Organizational StatusThe position will work in collaboration with CEDaR colleagues, UBC staff and faculty, community researchers and partners, industry partners, and other contributors. The CEDaR supervisor will consult with and be responsive to feedback from the CEDaR advisory committee.Work PerformedKey Duties:

  • Leads and oversees the design and implementation of programs and services to support emerging media needs in community-driven research at CEDaR
  • Provides technical consultation, advice and instruction to faculty members, community-based researchers, and undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students in the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques in documentation, mobilization and stewardship of data.
  • Assesses CEDaR staff, researchers and community partners research project requirements, and connects them with appropriate on campus technical experts(e.g. web development, UX, programming, development, software design, AR, VR, video game design, 3D printing, podcasting).
  • Facilitates conversations between CEDaR staff, researchers, community partners and the technical experts supporting their research projects; translates researchers’ requirements into technical language
  • Designs and develops plans for implementation of new media technologies in the CEDaR space in support of community-led initiatives (both in the physical and digital infrastructures); oversees implementation.
  • Collaborates with related UBC departments to design and provide support in new media technologies for community, Indigenous faculty, staff, and students, and community-engaged researchers.
  • Oversees development and implementation of data management for culturally sensitive data; Writes and maintains documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Supports researchers and community partners in grant writing; Develops and writes technical aspects of grants
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve research objectives.
  • Communicates with university and community-based researchers and other project partners of varying technical ability and subject matter expertise
  • Supports software development lifecycle and follows appropriate programming/development methodologies and best practices.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assignments as determined by directors and advisory committee.
Consequence of Error/JudgementThe primary focus of this unit is to provide a safe, supportive space for faculty, staff, and students to develop new, community-oriented technologies. Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and use of CEDaR resources by its users. Inappropriate judgment could potentially damage the reputation of CEDaR, and could have a negative impact on future partnerships.Supervision ReceivedWorks under the general direction of CEDaR’s co-directors. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively and carry out work to completion. Works on tasks to meet deadlines on various projects. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of desired results.Supervision GivenThis position works as a member of CEDaR. This position will supervise CEDaR student staff and volunteers.Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Masters degree in a field related to the responsibilities of the position (such as digital media, information sciences, data sciences, or design) preferred. Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work experience with integrating technical and artistic expertise and professionals preferred.
  • Comfort and experience with relationship building and community-engaged collaboration is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working on community-engaged projects
  • Experience developing and supporting visualizations in scholarship and scholarly communication projects.
  • Interest and experience with iterative and consultative multi-step design and development processes
  • Experience using immersive media (VR, AR, video games, GIS, digital curation) in academic settings
  • Working knowledge of immersive media (VR/AR/360 Video) development tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, WebVR Tools, ARToolKit Apple ARKit, Google ARCore, etc.
  • Experience in operating the latest VR/AR/360 Video equipment such as HTC Vive, Oculus, Microsoft Hololens, 360 cameras, etc.
    • Maintains a current awareness of emerging trends in Reality (VR/AR/XR etc) and Visualization.
  • Experience working with sensitive, community, and humanities data.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and users in the provision of visualization services.
  • Proven ability to work in a team-based environment, and with faculty, staff, students, and community members. Must be able to maintain attention to detail when tracking multiple projects or activities. Must be able to take initiative and work under pressure to meet tight timelines.
  • Project management experience is an asset.
