The Office of the Vice President Research & Innovation (VPRI) oversees UBC s research infrastructure, strategy and international engagement. The Institutional Programs Office (IPO) is an administrative unit of the Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation portfolio. The IPO administers major federal and regional awards including Canada Foundations for Innovation (CFI), British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF), Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC), and Pacific Economic Development Canada programs. The IPO provides both pre- and post-award support and services to UBC Faculty including internal review of grant applications prior to submission to the funding agencies, budget development support, and post-award financial management support.This CFI/BCKDF Program Officer is responsible for providing direction on planning and application development to faculties and departments in collaboration with the Managing Director, Research Support Services (RSS), and UBC CFI Advisor, including providing authoritative information on administrative processes on CFI/BCKDF funding opportunities. Working with the CFI Advisor and the Managing Director, RSS, this position provides services to increase faculty members ability to secure CFI/BCKDF, and associated matching funding, identifies interdisciplinary research synergies, and advises both internal and external researchers, peer review panels, and other stakeholders to build highly competitive funding proposals.Organizational StatusReporting to the Managing Director, RSS, the incumbent works closely with the UBC CFI Advisor as well as faculty from all Faculties, Departments and Schools at all UBC campuses, and senior management within the Vice President Research & Innovation portfolio.Work PerformedCFI Program Facilitation

  • Leads the planning and development of CFI and BCKDF funding opportunities. This includes providing authoritative information on UBC and IPO administrative processes associated with CFI and BCKDF research funding opportunities, and providing direction and setting priorities and goals for each funding opportunity. This will also include establishing work plans and timelines.
  • Advises on the alignment of research project and the funding program. Provides guidance on the development of research budgets for the proposals, to ensure that all funding agency and university requirements are met.
  • Manages the development and delivery of IPO programs (e.g., internal review, Test Your Concept Sessions and CFI & BCKDF information sessions), with the aim of improving the research funding success of UBC.
  • Plans, manages and handles university-wide communications about the CFI and BCKDF competitions and processes at UBC including internal review, next steps meetings, and workshops.
  • Identifies interdisciplinary research synergies, matches and secures funding opportunities to research activities and researchers. This will include contacting faculty and notifying them of the funding opportunities and services available through the Institutional Programs Office. Also, this may involve coordinating development of collaborative research proposals and grant applications.
  • May coordinate the development and writing of complex, institutional funding proposals (i.e. CERC, NCE Classic/CECR and Research Excellence Fund). This may include handling communications for the development of the proposal.
  • Coordinate and support to the implementation of selected large-scale research projects.
  • Plans and provides direction for a large number of developing research proposals of varying scope from applications of 1 to 3 Principal Investigators to large-scale applications of up to 10 PIs and may involve multi-institutional projects.
  • Plans and manages the internal review process for the CFI and BCKDF funding competitions. This may include engaging both internal and external reviewers.
  • Provides leadership in the planning and management of the support services to improve funding success for researchers applying to CFI and BCKDF funding opportunities.
  • Plans, manages and coordinates the delivery of educational programs across all campuses (e.g., information sessions, next steps meetings, Research Orientation Day for new faculty members) for the CFI and BCKDF funding competitions. Recruits guest speakers (e.g., past CFI expert review and/or Multi-Disciplinary Assessment Committee members) and develops the programs in collaboration with faculties, departments and sites.
  • Provides strategic and editorial feedback on CFI and BCKDF grant proposals.
  • Responsible for liaising with faculty, Associate Deans, Research and professional support staff (e.g., Grant Facilitators, Development Officers) at all UBC campuses to ensure applications meet the requirements of the funding agencies.
  • Liaises with other partner institutions to coordinate the submission of grant applications for multi-institutional projects to ensure that submission is in compliance with funding agency guidelines, and within the approved funding envelope.
  • Creates and maintains an in-house library of successful CFI and BCKDF grant proposals obtained from UBC researchers.
  • Advises faculty at all UBC campuses (e.g. Point Grey, Okanagan), on the review process and funding requirements.
  • Provides one on one consultation to faculty and associated team members with the aim of improving the strength and competitiveness of funding proposals.
  • Analyzes and interprets data, and makes recommendations. This may involve presentation of trend analysis and interpretation to a group of academics/senior administrators or distributed in the form of a written document.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
Consequence of Error/JudgementAn extensive degree of judgment and initiative is required to ensure accurate and appropriate decision-making in a variety of tasks and responsibilities. Tact and diplomacy are essential to foster unit and multidisciplinary buy in on this highly effective process. Providing incomplete or inaccurate information could result in misinformation and misstatements that would lead to an ineffective system not supported by Faculties/Depts., investigators or reviewers, thereby limiting UBC’s ability to compete effectively in CFI and BCKDF competitions. Erroneous or incomplete information provided to the research community could impact funding success or result in missed opportunities.Poor management or improper decisions could compromise the successful review process at the University and could damage the reputation of the Institutional Programs Office, the VP Research and Innovation Office and the University.Supervision ReceivedWorks with wide latitude within broad goals and objective developed in conjunction with the Managing Director, RSS and CFI Advisor.Supervision GivenProvides functional direction to researchers and research staff and may assign work to grant facilitators and grant writers. May assign work to one or more full-time Administration Clerk(s) as well as Work Study Student(s) in the Institutional Program Office. Formally trains new staff on office and CFI processes and procedures.Minimum QualificationsFor research project leadership, a post-graduate degree or an equivalent professional designation is required with a minimum of five years of related experience, including experience in a field of specialization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Otherwise, an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required with a minimum of seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred Qualifications
