Job Description

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.Position title: Chef de PartieDepartment: Food & BeverageReports to: Sr. Sous ChefEmployee status: Full-time, Permanent, HourlyHours per week: up to 37.5Compensation: $24.00 per hour, plus gratuities & benefits (health and dental plan after 3-months)Position PurposeThe Chef de Partie is responsible for the day-to-day kitchen operation in our Commissary Kitchen. The Chef de Partie’s duties include preparing and executing menus according to the AMS recipes. The Chef de Partie ensures a safe and healthy work environment by following AMS Health & Safety and general Food Safety guidelines. They lead by example ensuring that the team members adhere to AMS standards at all times. This role requires a self-motivated individual with excellent culinary, leadership, and organizational skills to ensure timely and professional service to our internal and external customers, as well as the supervision of the kitchen.Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administering the day-to-day operations and meeting food and labour cost targets
  • Building upon our existing successful menu line-up
  • Building upon our current comprehensive training program for staff
  • Ensuring for all areas that targets of food quality, food safety, food cost management and staff training in food handling and knowledge, are met
  • Working closely with the Sr. Sous Chef to ensure the operational success of the department adhering to AMS and Food Safety standards
  • Ordering and preparing goods as needed to meet the expected business volumes
  • Executing orders in a timely manner to meet or exceed guest expectations in accordance to AMS standards
  • Following AMS recipes and reducing food waste
  • Ensuring ongoing safe operation of appliances, equipment and tools (WHMIS)
  • Working action food stations for catered events as required
  • Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Shift work (daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays), on call
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ kitchen experience in a high volume restaurant
  • Banquet and Bulk Cooking Experience preferred
  • Minimum Food Safe level 1 certification
  • Experienced professional knife skills are required
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multitasking environment with little supervision
  • Ability to lift up to 22.5 kgs (50lbs)
  • Ability to do shift work (daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays), on call
  • Good oral and written English communication skills is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with youth an asset
