Job Description

Position Summary

  • Responsible for tactical (0-180 day) vessel planning and ensuring that Waterfront has contracted vessel capacity available for every Methanex cargo which needs to be transported by sea (Globally).
  • In conjunction with the Commercial Planner (Backhauls), develop, adjust and update Waterfront’s tactical vessel employment strategy.
  • Ensure that the tactical strategy enables Waterfront to meet all contractual obligations, while taking into account shipping market economics and market opportunities.
  • Ensure that the tactical strategy is aligned with the Strategic plan developed by the Commercial Director and President.
  • Ensure that any changes or risks to the tactical strategy are communicated to the Commercial Director.
  • In conjunction with the Commercial Planner (Backhauls), ensure that the Tactical employment of the fleet is optimized by minimizing the cost of delivering Methanol for Methanex while maximizing Waterfront’s profitability.
  • When a Time Charter or Contract of Affreightment (COA) vessel is not available for any given Methanex cargo, authority to engage with brokers and owners to contract transportation under a spot arrangement. This includes all regional transhipments.
  • Authority to negotiate Commercial shipping terms for spot contracts with third party owners, with assistance from the Commercial Director when needed.
  • Communicate and coordinate Methanol voyage planning with the Operations groups, Global Supply Chain and Methanex Marketing regions.
  • Ensure that strong customer focus, relationship and performance for internal customers is maintained.
  • Ensure that strong relationships are built with third party brokers, owners and suppliers.
  • Adhere to the principals of RC, by participating in the Waterfront Management System and supporting the RC and Quality Supervisor in RC and ISO initiatives.
Position ResponsibilitiesCosts, direct and indirect
  • Focus on achieving the lowest possible rates for the service levels required for spot shipments.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the shipping market so that opportunities can be identified
  • Host/Lead weekly planning calls with Global Supply and the Marketing regions.
  • Host/lead weekly update calls with the Waterfront Operations group to ensure forward vessel planning is understood, risks are communicated and issues are resolved.
  • Develop strong relationships with our third party vessel providers
  • Develop strong relationships with our broker network so that our understanding of the market allows us to achieve the lowest possible rates
  • Travel to global conferences, and events to visit third party contacts.
  • Host third party meetings when visitors travel to Vancouver.
  • Calculate any deviation claims on Methanol voyages which need to be rebilled.
Communication
  • Maintain a strong relationship with the Operations Director and Operations group (Vital link between planning and execution)
  • Gather third party Methanol movement intelligence from the brokers, vessel owners and other market participants and communicate them to Methanex and the Strategic Market Planning Team (SMPT).
  • Provide Methanex with rate and cost estimates for various supply scenarios and communicate all potential risks.
  • Provide Methanex with forward freight forecasts on a monthly basis.
WFS Management System (RC/ISO) Continuous Improvement
  • Work with Commercial Manager to ensure we deal with owners who follow the principal of RC, and the RC clause be in all spot and COA C/P
  • Give full support to RC
  • Ensure ISO/RC is followed in Commercial Coordinator day to day dealings
  • Actively participate in Waterfront Management System and support the Quality and Responsible Care Supervisor in the develop a system to improve group participation and involvement
Strategic Initiatives
  • Involved in developing the long term Strategic Plan (assisting Commercial Director)
  • Assist Commercial Director in establishing and renewals Contracts of Affreightments (COAs)
  • Assist Commercial Director, Marketing regions and Global Supply Chain with strategic Methanol transportation projects and initiatives
  • Involved and lead part of the annual logistics budgeting process
  • Support the Commercial Director and Management Team with reporting and data as required.
Information System Development
  • Participate in Veson/Imos ERP enhancement projects and initiatives
  • Continue to find innovative opportunities to streamline processes and utilize IT solutions to enhance the effectiveness of the Commercial department
Position QualificationsEducation and/or Professional Designation
  • A university degree in an associated discipline (i.e. accounting, engineering, business administration, operations)
  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in the shipping and logistics industry
  • Vessel Operations experience (Preferred)Knowledge of an international shipping company’s operations is preferred, in order to understand the reasonableness of data received. Experience in the shipping / logistics industry is a plus, while interest is a requirement for success.
Experience & Skills
  • Must develop an excellent understanding of how the shipping market works (including regulatory), the players, and closely follow and read market changes and trends
  • Must develop an excellent understanding of the dynamics of a global commodity business
  • Strong interpersonal skill with the ability develop and maintain relationships easily
  • Disciplined analytical approach and solid understanding of financial theory Leadership skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent negotiation skills – able to negotiate on a win/win basis
  • Willingness to communicate via the telephone when something is urgent or important
  • Willingness to travel globally
  • Strong computer skills in desktop applications (Excel, Word, MS Project, Access)
