Job Description

Position Location: 1 Positions Available: 1 in Coquitlam, BCPosition Dates: From June 28 to August 18, 2021, 15 hours per week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Possibility that the positions will be extended into the fall and winter to work with the LunchLAB program in Vancouver.Good Food for AllEveryone deserves access to healthy land, food, and community. That’s why Fresh Roots and Growing Chefs are teaming up to help kids and youth learn how to grow, cook, and share healthy food through LunchLAB. LunchLAB Community Eats is a special program that supports the youth participating in Fresh Roots’ SOYL youth, summer leadership program.Fresh Roots’ SOYL programs hire diverse high school youth each summer to grow themselves and good food. Over the course of this unique summer leadership and employment program, youth gain skills in growing, cooking, and selling food, as well as a greater connection to themselves, their community and their local food system.The PositionAs a LunchLAB Community Eats Chef Educator in Coquitlam, you’ll work alongside our SOYL programs (Coquitlam at Suwa'lkh School) to inspire and engage youth by supporting them to discover the joy of cooking. Twice a week through our programs, you’ll work with high school aged youth to create meals for roughly 40 people. As you cook, you’ll also help share critical food systems and kitchen skills lessons. Your role will be mentor, educator, and chef. Each week, you’ll work with youth to teach them new skills, helping them understand the art and science of cooking and nutrition as well as the joy and celebration of connection to healthy food.The position will also be expected to practice and ensure all COVID and food safe protocols are followed. As restrictions and public health recommendations shift the specific protocols may also need to change.If you’re passionate about cooking, food and working with teens to cultivate personal growth and community leadership, this could be the job for you!You will:

  • Attend 1 week (15 hours) of prep and training.
  • Attend 1 wrap up week (15 hours).
  • During SOYL (6 weeks x 15 hours):
  • In partnership with rotating groups of 5 youth, you’ll develop menus, prepare, cook and share lunch for 40 people, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Ensure food safety and kitchen safety practices are followed at all times.
  • Ensure health and safety of all youth participants.
  • Source, order, pick up food supplies (Mondays).
  • Manage kitchen and ensure cleanliness.
  • Maintain kitchen inventory and stock rotation.
  • Liaise with volunteer chef crew.
  • Deliver food systems and literacy skills curriculum on lunch days.
Qualifications
  • Skill or development in cooking instruction/culinary classes
  • Experience working with youth with complex learning and life challenges strongly preferred
  • Patience, when it comes to learning and teaching
  • Restaurant kitchen experience-an asset
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Food Systems-an asset
  • Great organization, communication, and time management skills
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to act as a leader in all culinary activities
  • Must Drive- valid driver’s license and has access to a car
  • Demonstrate respect and empathy for all
  • Able to pass a criminal record check to be able to work with children and vulnerable - populations
Key Details
  • This is a part-time position 15 hours/week: Mondays (8 am to 1 pm), Tuesdays (8 am to 1 pm) & Wednesdays (8 am to 1 pm), from June 28 to August 18, 2021.
  • We will hire one position at Coquitlam.
  • Pay rate $20.00 to $21.00/hour.
  • Possibility that the positions will be extended into the fall and winter to work with the LunchLAB program in Vancouver.
**Possibility of extension into fall and winter with LunchLAB VancouverWe are optimistic that we will be able to operate the LunchLAB program in two schools in Vancouver starting in the fall of 2021. As such, there is a good possibility that these summer Chef Educator positions could be extended into the school year. We are awaiting confirmation about how schools will be structured in fall 2021 and what programs will be offered that will align with COVID safety.LunchLAB is a new school meal program where kids and youth grow, cook, and share healthy food together. Currently being operated at two schools, the sous chef-in-residence role supports the Chef-in-Residence and teachers to help cook and share healthy food. Twice a week at Lord Roberts Elementary School or Total Education high school you’ll work with 8 students to prepare meals for 50-185.
