The position is responsible for planning, designing, facilitating, documenting, implementing and evaluating professional development programs, consultation services, and educational resources to UBC faculty, staff, and students and to external clients. The Indigenous Initiatives portfolio supportsand aligns stakeholder teaching and learning needs with university-wide strategic priorities outlined in Place and Promise, specifically, Indigenous engagement, intercultural learning, and student engagementThe Educational Consultant’s work contributes to CTLT’s scholarly research and evaluation activities through consultation, program planning, and resources for classroom and campus climate, intersectionality, and Indigenous initiatives. The position addresses differences in social identities and social structures in the classroom, for example, the impacts of race, ethnicity, ancestry, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and religion on classroom dynamics, and how these dynamics affect each person’s ability to engage in teaching and learning p rocesses.Organizational StatusThe Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology works collaboratively with academic and administrative units to advance the scholarly practice of the teaching and learning community while supporting technology-enabled learning environments. Situated within CTLTs Teaching, Learning and Professional Development (TLPD) portfolio, CTLT Indigenous Initiatives (CTLT II) offers programming, academic resources, consultations, and support focused on Indigenous engagement in curriculum, pedagogy, classroom climate, and professional development. CTLT II works with Indigenous community partners such as the Musqueam Indian Band, faculty, staff, and students to evaluate, develop, and bridge expertise around initiatives committed to improvingclassroom climate and campus environments conducive to student success, and strengthening local capacity to conduct effective approaches to teaching and learning in this area. The position collaborates with other members of the TLPD team and CTLT staff, and partners and consults with UBC departments, units, and Faculty-driven initiatives on professional development and capacity-buildingin this area.Work PerformedResearch, design, facilitate, evaluate and document processes (actions and events to accomplish something with a group over time) in order to accomplish short and long-term teaching and learning related goals for initiatives to improve Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning at UBC. A process may consist of anything from a single workshop to a large, multi-phase initiative (for example, a Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund/TLEF project).Provide consulting services for members of the UBC teaching and learning community and external clients for integrating Indigenous content in courses, strategies and approaches to enable productive conversations around socially contentious issues, process design, facilitation, assessment of learning, program evaluation, educational leadership, and related topics.Prepare long plans for the development and delivery of educational programming on topics related to supportive classroom and campus climate in alignment with university-wide strategic initiatives for Indigenous Engagement, Inclusion, and Student Wellness in Teaching and Learning.Conduct needs assessments and consultations with faculty and community partners (including Faculty Advisory on Classroom Climate and Musqueam Advisory) to develop, implement, and assess Indigenous Initiatives’ programs and resources.Develop and facilitate face-to-face, online and blended workshops andcommunities of practice for members of the UBC teaching community and other interested parties in Indigenous initiatives, classroom and campus climate, and other relevant professional development topics.Collaborate with Indigenous Initiatives staff in program planning and program evaluation.Collaborate with other members of the TLPD team and CTLT staff to develop comprehensive plans and procedures, and educational resources in support of overall TLPD and CTLT strategic goals.Coordinate multiple projects within and external to UBC.Negotiate contracts and agreements; and maintain collaborative relationships with staff, faculty, departments, and community representatives involved in projects.Liaise with and provide design and facilitation expertise and recommendations to members of the UBC teaching community and other interested parties.Represent CTLT and UBC teaching and learning interests through provincial, national and international associations and liaisons. Disseminate research, practice and ideas at local, national and international conferences; present papers for publication and collaborate with colleagues in developing proposals to do this.Ensure compliance of educational programming with university policies and strategic plans, governmental regulations and international governance. Respond to confidential needs and requests of individual facultymembers, while upholding the reputation of CTLT.Consequence of Error/JudgementErrors in judgment may have negative consequences for the quality of teaching and learning at UBC. They may also result in the inefficient use of resources, and/or poor relations among educational developers, staff or individuals participating in facilitated processes. They may damage the reputation of the University and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.Must exercise a high level of professionalism and judgment when dealing with various units and departments, as well as with non-UBC colleagues. Failure to follow best practices and exercise sound judgment could result in significant resource and reputation costs to the Centre, and could possibly have a negative impact on future internal and external partnerships.This position also requires familiarity with communication and consultation processes and protocols in working with Indigenous faculty, staff, students, and community members. A lack of familiarity with the issues for Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning could result in dysfunctional or ineffective understandings and approaches, which could perpetuate problematic situations and negatively impact students, work colleagues, and others.Supervision ReceivedWorks independently with general direction from the Senior Educational Consultant, Indigenous Initiatives.Supervision GivenManages junior staff and project teams of varying composition, depending on the scope and nature of the specific project. Project teams may include University faculty members, students and staff, colleagues within CTLT, members of other teaching and learning units, members of other educational institutions, external clients and specialists hired for specific tasks.Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in Education. Minimum of six years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred QualificationsMasters degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with a primary focus in Indigenous Studies. Experience in curricular design, learning experience design, resource development, program development, facilitation, and evaluation in a higher education setting, especially in the areas of critical Indigenous studies and social justice. Experience in design, development and facilitation of processes and educational programs or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience in facilitating group processes both face-to-face and online.Experience in teaching face-to-face and using online and multimediatechnologies. Experience with educational program planning and evaluation. Demonstrated teaching skills, and familiarity with a wide variety of teaching and learning techniques. Demonstrated process design and facilitation skills, and familiarity with a wide variety of facilitation approaches and techniques. Demonstrated project management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet multiple deadlines. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, planning, organizational, and problem solving skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Knowledge of University policies and procedures is considered an asset. Experience developing strategic engagement processes and developing strategicplans is an asset. Ability to maintain accuracy and high attention to detail. Ability to think strategically and exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
