Job Description

Job Title: Family and Children’s Program CoordinatorEmployer: Capilano Community Services Society (CCSS)Location: North Vancouver, BCType of Position: Permanent, Part-Time at 21 hours per weekHours of Work: 5 days/week, Monday – Thursday, 9:00am to 1:30pm, and Fridays 9am to 12pm (flexible hours may be required based on operational requirements)Wage Range: $26/hour to $28/hour grossBenefits: An extended health benefits package is available following 3 months of consecutive employment and successful completion of a 3-month probationary review.Vacation: 15 working days per year prorated for part-time employeesStart Date: January 17, 2022 (negotiable)About Capilano Community Services SocietySince 1970, Capilano Community Services Society (CCSS) has connected residents of the North Shore to their communities by providing support services, resources, and outreach programs that address the current and emerging needs of at-risk youth, and frail and isolated seniors. In early 2022, CCSS will be moving to the new Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre in the Lower Capilano area and offering the local community, on-site social programs and support services for all ages. In this facility, CCSS will be partnering with North Vancouver Recreation and Culture, and North Vancouver District Public Library.Overview of the Family and Children’s ProgramCCSS’s Family and Children’s Program offers low-cost and no-cost programs and services for parents/families of children aged 0 to 5 years old, to play, learn and connect, in a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally safe environment. There is a particular focus on assisting families living in conditions of risk or vulnerability, to access our programs and services, while providing opportunities to strengthen their connections to the larger community.Our drop-in and registered programs support early child development and parental efficacy, utilizing a strengths-based approach and a focus on social-emotional learning. Our community-responsive programming seeks to improve health and wellbeing, increase parenting skills and knowledge, strengthen social connections, build resiliency, and improve food security, so that families can thrive. We offer structured and unstructured play that includes songs, music, arts/crafts, stories, cooking, snacks/lunch, along with parent education and support workshops, resources, and referrals.Our programming is intended for the child/ren and their parent/guardian to be in attendance and learning together. We do not provide childcare or daycare programs.Overview of the Family and Children’s Program Coordinator RoleThe Coordinator will play a key role in the launch, development, delivery and expansion of our new Family and Children’s Program. As we build capacity, an integral responsibility of the Coordinator will be to ensure the community of families and children we serve, are provided with opportunities to easily access our programs, and become actively engaged. The Coordinator’s primary day-to-day responsibilities will be to coordinate and supervise the activities of the drop-in and registered programs. Additionally, the Coordinator will work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to ensure the provision of high quality, innovative programming that is responsive to community needs and interests.The Family and Children’s Program Coordinator is reports to the Program Manager.Responsibilities

  • Develop and plan drop-in and registered programs and support services in conjunction with other program staff, including identifying workshop instructors/facilitators and community partners to support program delivery.
  • Coordinate service provision including scheduling of staff, volunteers, facilitators, and community partners.
  • Provide supervision to program and volunteers.
  • Deliver, facilitate, and supervise program activities, such as arts/crafts, music, circle time, storytelling, cooking, parent education workshops.
  • Build relationships with other community services providers, such as early childhood educators, health practitioners, and Indigenous community service providers to identify potential opportunities for partnerships/collaboration and develop reciprocal referral sources.
  • Create a welcoming environment and ensure families are familiar with the rights and responsibilities of participation in the program.
  • Build relationships with families and recognize children/families who are potentially at-risk in order to offer additional support, including connecting families to community resources, initiating referrals for families, and supporting them in the navigation process.
  • Encourage and model positive behaviour within the group setting.
  • Assess and determine opportunities for volunteer involvement, and assist in providing training, mentoring, and coaching to program volunteers.
  • Assist with marketing and communications for the program.
  • Manage the program budget and undertake administrative program tasks such as maintaining program supplies including consumables, books, arts and crafts, toys, and food supplies.
  • In conjunction with the Program Manager, implement quarterly program evaluations in cooperation with staff, participant families and community partners, and undertake community mapping and needs assessments.
  • Collect quantitative and qualitative program data, maintain client records and prepare reports, ensuring that privacy and confidentiality of records is strictly maintained and that families are educated on the need to collect data and the limits of confidentiality.
  • In conjunction with the Program Manager, create and maintain policy and procedures for the Family and Children’s Program in accordance with the broader principles and practices of CCSS.
  • Adhere and ensure adherence to all relevant policies and procedures related to participant safety, suspicion of child abuse, illness, and accidents.
  • Establish, coordinate, and facilitate a Parent Advisory group.
  • Provide professional and knowledgeable representation of CCSS in the community, including delivering presentations to community groups/organizations.
  • Maintain a commitment to ongoing learning and remain current on emerging trends and issues regarding child and family development work, and parenting practices, along with up-to-date knowledge of local community services and resources.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A certificate or diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Infant Development and Supported Child Development (IDSC), or Family Resource Practitioner (FRP). An equivalent combination of education will be considered.
  • A minimum of 2 years recent experience in program development, delivery, and facilitation, ideally in a coordinator role, working with children 0 to 5 years old and their families, in a play-based, family-centred setting.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural groups including Indigenous children and families is preferred.
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR Certificate with infant/toddler certification.
  • FoodSafe Level 1 Certificate an asset.
  • Training in Mother Goose, Nobody’s Perfect Parenting, and/or Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is an asset

  • Ability to use good judgement, and demonstrate sensitivity, when working with vulnerable individuals and when making referrals.
  • Demonstrated awareness, understanding and sensitivity in all issues related to diversity and inclusion (such as financial status, social isolation, learning ability, gender and sexual identity, language, cultural identity, and migration status).
  • Passionate about supporting and providing opportunities for families and children to thrive
  • Demonstrate basic computer literacy in standard office software programs and comfort navigating online meeting platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and operate within an assigned budget.
  • Ability to speak another language in addition to English is an asset
  • Ability to carry up to 20 lbs and move furniture as required for room set-up/clean-up.
