Job Description

Job DescriptionThe Family Support Worker will provide education, support, and advocacy on issues pertaining to women and children in the Downtown Eastside Community.Responsibilities:

  • Team work, plan with the other Family Support Worker
  • Facilitate groups including: Violence Prevention groups
  • Provide one-to-one support to families.
  • To connect with walk-in clients, providing intake assessment and acting as a referral services to clients needing family support.
  • Working collaboratively with community organizations.
  • Organizing and planning the weekly schedule of events for the Saturday Family Drop-In.
  • Attending community events or accessing community amenities.
  • Managing the participants who attend, directing volunteers, including a person who cooks for the Saturday group.
  • Regular communication and liaising with CTC kitchen staff to order food for programs.
Qualifications:
  • Education in the field (or working towards it) or a combination of training, education and experience would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of FASD and how it pertains to children and families is an asset.
  • Group facilitation and presentation skills are required.
  • Food Safe Certificate and First Aid Certificate are an asset
  • Demonstrated skills in community development, advocacy and peer support, as well as knowledge on issues facing families living in severe poverty are desired.
  • Knowledge of local resources to refer participants to.
  • Understanding of the importance of boundaries and flexibility, being adaptable to meet the needs of the participants while maintaining safety.
  • Ability to direct, guide and problem solve with volunteers and families; while maintaining dignity, respect and relationships.
  • Understanding of safety – in groups and in the community setting (for outings).
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Computer skills and filing experience.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and relationship building skills.
  • A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.
