Job Description

Geodata Scientist – 12-month Contract, North America

  • Be part of a team of people with a passion to help RTX geoscientists make mineral discoveries using data science and machine learning tools
  • Learn to prototype, develop, manage, update, and maintain complex analytical models, processes, frameworks, and tools.

  • This is a one-year secondment opportunity for a Rio Tinto employee, with possibility for renewal
  • One-year contract, work-from-home within North America
The Americas Exploration Data Science team (AMR EDS) is looking to engage a Geodata Scientist for a minimum 12-month secondment. With AMR EDS, you will have a chance to develop analytics insights on where in the Americas we should explore to help us discover better deposits faster. Working as part of the global EDS team, which is part of the Exploration Technical Knowledge (ETK) group in Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX), you will enable geo-integration of advanced analytics concepts to help connect workflows, remove silos and conduct general data wrangling of complex datasets.This is a great opportunity for an exploration geoscientist with a penchant for machine learning and data science concepts to work with a skilled analytics team in a diverse and rapidly evolving field.   • Apply your knowledge of geology, geochemistry and/or geophysics to help the team build relevant analytics solutions that systematically and quantifiably help increase our discovery rates
  • Work within an Agile framework to deliver outcomes over timeboxed sprints
  • Upskill your knowledge of machine learning solutions and automated processes to cleanse, integrate and evaluate large data sets from multiple disparate sources
  • Develop an understanding of analytics processes and support identify opportunities to solve business problems with analytics solutions (e.g. mineral prospectivity mapping, Competitor intelligence tracking, training dataset building)
  • Liaise with EDS team stakeholders and partners (e.g., the Generative, Commercial, Operational, DIMS, DataRock, KoBold) to streamline processes and extract know-how.
  • Share your learnings and insights with the regional geoscientists on a regular basis
  • Focus on Safety, Ethics, Cybersecurity, and IP, in the context of both analytics and the broader Rio Tinto.
What you Bring:
  • University - Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a Geoscience discipline
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience in a geoscience role in exploration including:
    • Developing geological models of the earth’s subsurface to understand the geological structure, rock characteristics and the likely distribution of mineral-bearing rocks.
    • An understanding of the leading indicators that help identify emerging opportunities
    • Monitoring the acquisition of data to ensure consistent quality.
    • Familiarity with aspects of the exploration cycle, including but not limited to: collecting and preparing geochemical samples, geophysical surveys and geophysical modeling methods, geological maps, drill samples, geological logs and petrophysical data, competitor tracking, resource modeling and evaluation.
    • Interpreting geoscientific results in consultation with other earth science professionals.
    • Programming and data science skills – minimum of one year working with machine learning codes, including demonstrable courses or projects undertaken
    • Proficient in Python and/or R; familiarity with Shiny apps or Streamlit/Dash is an asset
    • Experience querying databases with SQL, Python, or R.

  • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics regression, classification, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision tree, neural networks, NLP, etc.
  • Natural curiosity and passion for data science applications in mineral exploration
