Job Description

Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.Basic FunctionHigh Level Applications (HLA) at TRIUMF refers to both a framework for software development, as well as a core suite of primarily web-based applications, to improve the way in which the particle accelerators at TRIUMF are operated. This includes reducing the overhead associated with operating the accelerator and improving both the quality and reliability of the ion beams delivered to experiments. The HLA specialist will maintain and improve upon the HLA framework and core apps.Principle Responsibilities

  • Maintains and further develops the software comprising the HLA framework and core apps.
  • Maintains and develops training material and documentation for the HLA framework.
  • Identifies new technologies for software development and data collection/analysis and searches for operational areas where new methods can be applied.
  • Contributes to applications of machine learning on beamline and accelerator operation.
  • The position advises other app developers using the HLA framework, helps ensure a coordinated development effort across the suite of HLA apps, and trains staff and students on usage of the framework.
Knowledge and SkillsStrong curiosity and a dedication to life-long learning are required for this position, including critical thinking and the ability to address unique problems in novel ways. The incumbent should demonstrate fundamental knowledge in both physics and software development. As such, a minor, dual-major, or graduate level education in physics will be an asset.The position requires the incumbent to have strong programming skills and be conversant in the major computer programming languages. Previous experience with Linux, Python and JavaScript is a prerequisite. Experience working with databases, Flask, packaging of Python code, Docker, and DevOps platforms like GitLab would be an asset.The incumbent should have strong communication, planning, organizational, and leadership skills, as well as effective relationship and team building abilities.Minimum Qualifications and Years of ExperienceMust have a B.Sc. in Computer Science or Physics, with minimum of 2 years of experience in software development.Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)As a requirement of this position, the successful candidate will need to provide acceptable proof that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, or demonstrate that they are unable to be vaccinated against COVID-19 for reasons protected under the BC Human Rights Code.
