Job Description

Job DescriptionThe Indigenous Relations Manager leads YWCA Metro Vancouver’s work to advance Truth and Reconciliation across our advocacy, programs and workplace, strengthens meaningful engagement with Indigenous peoples, organizations and governments, and helps to guide the organization to work in a culturally safe way with Indigenous communities.Responsibilities:

  • Creates a clear, long-term vision for ongoing engagement with Indigenous peoples, organizations, communities and governments [and incorporating an Indigenous worldview in its work]
  • Designs and implements principles to support culturally safe engagement with Indigenous communities and program participants
  • Contributes to the YWCA’s Truth and Reconciliation framework and develops multi-year, actionable workplans to embed reconciliation across our programs, processes, policies and decision-making
  • Identifies mutually beneficial partnerships, supports and services, as well as opportunities for collaboration, gaps in services and emerging issues
  • Collaborates with other organizations to determine how the YWCA can support their priorities and to learn about their program participants, resources and program content
  • Identifies potential advocacy issues that support reconciliation and are aligned with YWCA front line experience, and partners with our Communications team to develop a strategy
  • Develops and implements employee training that increases awareness and understanding of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous peoples
  • Identifies and supports designing and delivering programs that advance Indigenous priorities and better support Indigenous families and elders, including self-care, healing, traditions, ceremonies, education, advocacy, homelessness, addictions, family reunification and assistance with learning Indigenous languages.
  • Actively contributes towards our employee Truth and Reconciliation committee and our subcommittee consisting of Board Members and staff, including organizing logistics of the Board/staff subcommittee
  • Contributes towards funding opportunities and proposals, as needed
  • Researches, produces reports, presentations and documents, as needed
  • Other duties as required
Desired Experience/Education/Skills Core CompetenciesA degree or diploma from a post-secondary institution is preferred, however, more important is the lived experience, passion and energy to work with our leadership and support YWCA Metro Vancouver’s journey in reconciliation.We value diversity, equity and inclusion and are committed to increasing Indigenous representation within our organization.   • A minimum of 5 years’ experience with of progressive responsibility in not-for-profit or equivalent
  • Inclusive leader who promotes diversity creating a culture of inclusion and belonging
  • Ability to provide leadership and develop strategic priorities and direction as it relates to Indigenous relations and our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage others in developing, supporting and implementing the strategic direction.
  • Strong relationship building skills and a demonstrated commitment to collaborate and partner with Indigenous groups and communities
  • Previous experience and an understanding of working with the Ministry of Children and Families, and Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services
  • Strong understanding and awareness of Indigenous cultures and communities from a historical and current perspective, including generational trauma and the impact of residential schools
  • Strong understanding of anti-oppression, decolonization, anti-racism and the ability to translate it back to our work
  • Proven ability to work with a trauma-informed and intersectional lens to create a culturally safe working environment
  • Knowledgeable in culture, teachings, ceremonies, celebrations
  • Demonstrate sound judgement on sensitive issues and political acumen.
  • Self-awareness which includes awareness of individual social location, power, and privilege, with a strong understanding of personal strengths and areas for growth.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently and interdependently and priorities multiple priorities.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office Products – Word, Excel, Powerpoint & Outlook.
