Please note that the expected salary will be prorated to 0.50 FTE.Job Description SummaryThe Lead Sport Dietitian for the UBC Varsity Athlete program is responsible for developing and leading or facilitating nutrition programs, projects, presentation, workshops and initiatives that enhance student-athletes health, well-being and sports performance. The Sport Dietitian is responsible for working closely with coaches to manage service delivery to over 600 athletes across 25 teams.Organizational StatusThe Lead Sport Dietitian will report to the Senior Manager, Sport Science and Sport Medicine and ultimately to Director of Athletics-Performance and Team Services of UBC Athletics.Work PerformedNutrition Counselling

  • Perform individual nutrition assessments with Varsity Athletes as appropriate via a variety of channels including email, phone, video and in person regarding topics including but not limited to recovery, illness, injury, a healthy relationship with food, body weight and composition management, modified diets due to allergies and intolerances, vegetarian and vegan diets, competition preparation and safe supplement use.
  • Lead Dietitian within the Integrated Support Team serving as the resident expert in the field of nutrition and high performance sport supporting both athletes and coaches.
Nutrition Education and Support
  • Manages the nutrition section of the Student-Athlete portal , developing and creating content based on the latest evidence-based developments in sport nutrition.
  • Develop and maintain a progressive, evidence-based, and safe supplementation policy and subsequent procedures in collaboration with the Sports Science and Sports Medicine Lead.
  • Leads the development and implementation of initiatives related to food, nutrition and high-performance sport.
  • Develops and implements evidence-based nutrition education initiatives to enrich student athlete learning and health.
  • Manages athlete cooking programs including the development, coordination and implementation of the lesson to teams throughout the competitive year in collaboration with coaching staff.
  • Develops evidence-based educational materials and workshops for student athletes on topics in collaboration with coaching and athletics staff.
  • Develops content for social media channels to promote good sports nutrition practices amongst the student athlete community.
  • Coordinates the delivery of bloodwork information between medical staff, athletes and coaches in a timely fashion to support health and performance.
  • Identify and complete appropriate nutrition-based projects in a reasonable time frame including collaboration with UBC Academic researchers where appropriate.
  • Provides nutritional guidance to teams including but not limited to competition, travel, rest and recovery.
  • Supports the Integrated Support Team in the implementation or monitoring of nutritional interventions.
Collaboration & Partnerships
  • Collaborates with the Partnerships and Business Development units on partnerships related to athlete nutrition support to ensure basic safe supplement policies and sound nutritional practices are being adhered to.
  • Works in partnership with SHHS to provide guidance to culinary teams regarding athlete menu development. Where necessary, analyzes menus and recipes to determine nutritional adequacy.
  • Supervises Dietetics students for the Health Promotion component of their practicum year as part of the relationship with UBC Dietetics.
  • Collaborates with campus partners including Land and Food Systems, Food Nutrition and Health and Student Health and Hospitality services to support initiatives related to student athlete well-being including student supervision.
  • Represents UBC Athletics interests on the UBC Wellbeing Food and Nutrition Working Group and supports initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the SHHS Dietitian on the Learn to Grocery Shop program which involves developing partnerships with on campus grocery stores, training and overseeing UBC students to deliver this program campus-wide.
  • In cooperation with the associate director of partnerships, manages the partnership with the preferred on-campus provider of sport nutrition products to athletes to support safe supplement use.
Consequence of Error/JudgementFailure to provide appropriate advice about diet and nutrition would have an adverse effect on the performance of the UBC varsity sports teams, which would result in a negative impact on the student-athlete experience. Poor judgment, decision-making, and/or errors could also involve legal and/or financial liability for the University and could have a damaging impact on the credibility and/or reputation of Athletics and Recreation varsity sports.Supervision ReceivedThis position requires a person capable of interpreting the position responsibilities and carrying them out with minimal direct supervision. Work is reviewed in terms of effectiveness and achievement of objectives. Reports to the Senior Manager, Sport Science and Sport Medicine.Supervision GivenThe successful candidate directly supervises a number of student workers and dietetics student interns.Preferred QualificationsApplicants for the position must have earned a BSc in Dietetics or Nutritional Science as well as the IOC Diploma in Sport Nutrition or Masters in a related field.Applicants must also be a registered dietitian in good standing with the College of Dietitians of BC, be a member of Dietitians of Canada, and hold professional liability insurance.A minimum of three years of recent related experience, including working with athletes and client counselling, is therefore required for the position.The successful candidate will provide nutrition consultation services to athletes.Experience with flexible and open learning techniques is desirable.
