Job Title Lead Systems AdministratorJob DescriptionEmily Carr University of Art + Design is a school of students, teachers, thinkers and makers unlike any other. Established in 1925, we are the only specialized, accredited, public, post-secondary university in British Columbia solely devoted to education and research in the creative sector and its associated knowledge economy. Our strategy, facilities, partnerships and resources are intentionally student-centred to foster dialogue, expression and open connections in support of the next generation of creative and cultural leaders.The Lead Systems Administrator maintains and supports web, email, and other servers and provides software development support for university websites, databases, and online applications. The Lead Systems Administrator is responsible for providing Tier 2 technical support for the University Community. They are also responsible for technology planning and providing backup support for other functions in Information Technology Services as needed. Permanent Full-Time Position8:30am to 4:30pm / Monday to Friday (Telecommuting Options Available)Pay Grade M ($66,626 to $71,329 per annum)Some Typical Duties Include:
  • Installs, maintains, and provides technical support on various database products, databases, information systems (such as email, ERP integration, LDAP, etc.), and web applications within a VMWare environment, or in cloud-hosted environments such as M365. Ensures the security and integrity of information systems, communication channels, and data, including confidential and sensitive information. Implements controls related to spam, phishing, unauthorized access to servers and systems, firewalls, user accounts, domain administration and potential security vulnerabilities. Monitors security related logs and responds to issues identified. Manages the provisioning of accounts on selected systems.
  • Provides technical support to users and others in ITS. Provides Tier 2 Help Desk support on security, email, account administration, web-based application and other technical matters.
  • In conjunction with other members of the ITS team, configures and administers servers, including security patching, analyzing system logs, operating system updates, user account management, and monitoring performance and capacity.
  • Assists in data migrations, data validations and error tracking (i.e. LDAP integrity, MySQL issues, etc.).
  • Develops and improves processes and tools to improve system provisioning, maintenance and monitoring of servers.
  • Maintains and extends web-based applications using a variety of development tools. Engages in appropriate implementation and testing of these applications and provides interfaces to and from other applications using the appropriate technology; works collaboratively with users to define requirements, assess technologies to meet those requirements, and to ensure application needs are met.
  • Contributes technical expertise and support to projects such as online course development, website design and the creation of administrative tools through consulting with users, analyzing needs, and translating them into appropriate systems.
  • Participates in development projects and related tasks within a small team environment, including projects related to the University website, annual Graduation Exhibition, blogs and wikis, online courses, forums, and numerous event-based sites. Communicates with University-wide non-technical users the possibilities of web-based technologies to enhance their projects.
  • Provides day-to-day supervisory direction and coaching for team members on work activities and priorities, technical issues, development approaches and methods. Provides feedback on the quality of their deliverables. Matters of an evaluative, disciplinary, contract administration and interpretation nature are referred to the Manager.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of IT-related University policies.
  • Maintains documentation in wiki format for area issues.
  • Represents the work area at department and other area meetings as required.
  • Acts in a backup capacity during the absence of other ITS staff as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in system administration in an open source Linux environment with some software development experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Linux with VMWare CentOS/RedHat environments.
  • Experience with Windows Server environments, M365 and Exchange administration.
  • Scripting experience with Python, Perl, and Bash.
  • Experience with automation and orchestration of new deployments and patching using tools such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef.
  • Programming experience with some exposure to PHP, JavaScript and MySQL.
  • Knowledge of Internet technologies (TCP/IP, NFS, DNS, Firewalls, etc.).
  • Knowledge of IT security best practices, processes and tools.
  • Experience with version control systems, such as SVN or Git.
  • Familiarity with Grails, WordPress, or Drupal is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of curriculum delivery tools, especially Moodle, is an asset.
  • Experience working in an ITIL based service environment is an asset.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate and deal effectively with students, staff, and faculty
  • Proven ability to write utilities, scripts and web-based applications within an open source environment.
  • Proven system diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to integrate web-based applications with proprietary and open source software.
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Supervisory skills including the ability to lead, encourage and provide support to team members.
  • Ability to work with considerable independence as well as working productively and supportively in a team environment.
  • Ability to keep current in area of expertise.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work between project assignments and support issues.
  • Ability to work flexible hours under exceptional circumstances.
