That means providing infrastructure and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of marine traffic and cargo within the port. Bring your unique strengths, perspectives and experiences to the port authority and join us in charting a course toward a sustainable future.Reporting to the vice-president of people, process & performance, the manager, internal communications will develop and execute an internal communication program that links individual and team efforts, engages employees, and helps reinforce the organization’s culture and values. The manager will provide leadership, direction and management to the port authority’s internal communications team to ensure internal communications strategies improve clarity and reach of information, mitigate issues and provide communication support for change management. This position works closely with Human Resources and other internal departments to provide strategic communications counsel, maintain awareness of projects and initiatives taking place across the organization, and ensure the delivery of strategic internal communication plans.In this role, the successful candidate will:Organizational and Human Resources communications capacity

  • Develop internal communications capacity within the organization to enhance access to information for port authority employees
  • Oversee and/or develop confidential written communications for the HR function including matters related to labour relations, collective bargaining and sensitive correspondence to internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide timely, value-adding support services to other departments, working closely with the communications department to align corporate communications approach
  • Oversee employee orientation information sessions program
  • Regularly assess internal communication needs and address gaps in processes and tools
Issues and change management
  • Identify and flag potential issues from an internal communications perspective, and work to provide alternative solutions to other departments
  • Support change management efforts across the organization, including the development of change management and communications strategies and plans
  • Work with the communications department to ensure consistency of messaging in internal and external communications materials
Strategic content development and communications channel maintenance
  • Improve visibility and understanding of the organization’s mission and vision by ensuring high-quality materials are developed and aligned with the three pillars of the sustainable port definition
  • Seek ways to leverage existing content and promote understanding and awareness of progress made toward meeting organizational goals
  • Explore ways to improve clarity in internal communications, ensuring a strong narrative and alignment with key issues
    • Prepare internally-focused stories to provide employees with clear, timely communication on the issues that matter
    • Provide context around internal communications materials to make information relatable to employees
    • Work with content owners across the organization to provide guidance on appropriate voice and writing style, and review for consistency before publishing
    • Support internal campaigns with internal communications strategies designed to engage employees
  • Responsible for content management on the corporate intranet (the Hub)
  • Oversee the development and delivery of strategic content for internal communication channels including Hub (intranet) stories, HubTalk, HubTalk for managers, town hall presentations, employee orientation session presentations, all-staff emails etc.
Leadership and Management
  • Work closely with the vice-president, people, process and performance to provide leadership and management on the team
  • Develop the internal communication plan, create individual development plans and support the development of team members. Responsible for the development and implementation of activities and programs designed to meet the intention of specific strategic priorities
  • Liaise with human resources on employee relations (selection, training, performance management, conflict resolution, etc.) and labour relations matters
  • Set clear expectations and goals, have defined position descriptions and reporting arrangements, coach team members to achieve goals and provide feedback to support performance improvement
  • Participate as a member of various management and inter-departmental teams in the planning, implementation and management of business initiatives.
  • Access training to become even better at skill sets and understand latest communications strategy thinking
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes, procedures and programs; design and implement change management strategies
  • Participate in the planning and the review of departmental operating costs, particularly with regard to staffing requirements, overheads, consultancy services, planned business programs and service provision
Specific CompetenciesMust be a self-motivated individual with an excellent command of the English language and an ability to synthesize complex information from diverse sources into simplified language for a range of audiences. Must be a collaborative and accountable leader, with the ability to manage team members and portfolios in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Must have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and be confident making informed decisions and strategic recommendations, as a trusted advisor to others in the organization. Must have technological competency, including proficiency in MS Office.Education & ExperienceMust have university degree in English, communications, or another acceptable degree, along with a minimum of five years of experience in internal communications at a management level, delivering effective strategic communications in a corporate environment within critical timeframe. Experience leading a comprehensive strategic communications program to advance an organizations business objectives. Must have experience leading communications initiatives, developing relevant messages for internal audiences, and a strong customer service orientation, while managing a breadth of responsibilities and providing strategic counsel to internal departments. Must have experience managing teams, with a track record of inspiring teamwork and solid results. Experience working with an advertising agency is an asset. Demonstrated experience adapting effectively to change in a fast-paced environment is essential.Working Conditions
