With five decades of development and construction expertise, a precise level of design and craftsmanship is evident in all the homes and commercial developments that Amacon builds.Position SummaryThe successful candidate will work closely with the VP, Finance & Tax, and the VP, Accounting to develop, manage, and execute tax strategies and policies. They will have a solid understanding of personal and corporate Canadian taxes, and monitor pending tax legislations that will impact the shareholders and corporate group. The candidate will also work closely and share information with various internal departments, in executing tax plans, identifying and mitigating against tax risks, and mentoring the accounting team on tax matters.ResponsibilitiesTaxation

  • Coordinate and oversee corporate tax planning and execution, with direction from senior management, including drafting written memorandums and execution checklists
  • Assist with shareholder matters, including estate planning.
  • Provide recommendations on tax strategies, and identify opportunities for process improvement
  • Simplify and report on complex tax plans to senior management
  • Ensuring tax plans are executed in a timely manner
  • Oversee, and ensure timely filing of personal returns (T1), corporate tax returns (T2), trust returns (T3), partnership (T5013) returns, T5 returns, foreign reporting forms, and tax elections.
  • Review US federal tax forms (1120; 5472; 114; 1042) and state tax forms (Colorado, California) prepared by an external US tax firm.
  • Manage and coordinate responses to CRA tax audits and enquiries for personal, corporate and excise tax matters
  • Review of tax working papers and supporting documentation prepared by the tax and corporate accounting team
  • Oversee the monthly tax reporting summary for management’s review
  • Ensure a system is in place for timely payment of tax installments to reduce instalment interest and penalties
  • Provide training to internal staff who are involved in preparation of tax returns
  • Remain up to date on new tax legislation and case law
  • Ad hoc tax tasks as required
Experience & Qualifications
  • Experience minimum of 5 years of related tax compliance and planning experience
  • Education: CPA designation, completion of In-depth program
  • Familiar with cross-border tax compliance, including foreign reporting (T106, T1134 and T1135 forms), foreign accrual property income
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Detailed oriented, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills
  • Flexible and positive attitude, with the ability to work well independently, and as part of a team
  • Experience in the real estate industry, and software programs such as Taxprep and/or Caseware is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook
Work ScheduleThis full-time salaried position works 8:30 am - 5:00 pm in the office, Monday through Friday and is in downtown Vancouver.
