Bring your unique strengths, perspectives and experiences to the port authority and join us in charting a course toward a sustainable future.The Onboarding and Orientation Specialist is responsible for leading and facilitating the VFPA’s onboarding and orientation program for new hires to ensure a smooth onboarding experience. This position will also provide guidance and advice to people managers on HR processes including recruitment, offboarding, and managing in a unionized environment.In this role, the successful candidate will:Accountabilities

  • Develop, schedule and deliver training/orientation programs for new employees
  • Develop training materials including quick reference guides, videos, e-learning material etc.
  • Provide consultancy to new recruits
  • Assist employees when they are promoted and/or choose to move to a new position or department
  • Provide guidance and advice to people leaders regarding recruitment, on-boarding and off-boarding services, requirements, collective agreement language, labour relations interpretation, and organizational hiring
  • Provide how to manage in a unionized environment training to people managers. Develop and design additional training as program evolves
  • Create and utilize on-boarding and off-boarding checklists to guide employees through necessary actions and processes, and solicit feedback from employees who are joining or exiting the organization
  • Gather feedback from newly hired employees about their experience and develop key strategies to continuously improve employee experience and time to productivity
  • Monitor retention and turnover rates of new hires
  • Interface with people leaders and employees about onboarding status
  • Work closely with the recruitment team to ensure a strong handoff and positive experience is created for all employees

Education & Experience
  • A university degree in human resource management, adult education or a related discipline plus a minimum of 3 years of related onboarding and orientation experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent
  • Experience with learning management systems/HRIS system
  • Proven experience in the design and delivery of training for multiple environments, including classroom-boarded and web-based learning formats
  • Understanding of collective agreements and employment terms
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of labor legislation and various HR practices
  • Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, the ability to build rapport, and the ability to deliver impactful, informative, effective presentations
