The Planning Analyst is a key member of the team, providing technical services to support a wide range of projects. This is an RFT position for the Financing Growth team. This position will also provide coordinated and managed support across the City-wide and Regional Division.Specific Duties/ResponsibilitiesWorking as an integral member of the Financing Growth team and other Divisional teams, the Planning Analyst is responsible for performing advanced research and technical planning work and must have the ability to use independent judgment with minimal supervision. The main types of work and responsibilities required for this position include:

  • Compile, interpret and report on technical data including land use and development, public benefit needs.
  • Creation of production-ready materials, including creation and delivery of presentations for senior management, City staff and the public.
  • Report writing including assistance in the writing and preparation of Council Reports.
  • Use of decision making skills as incumbent will become knowledgeable on Financing Growth, Transit/Transportation, Regulatory Policy and Economic Planning matters.
  • Creation and maintenance of electronic databases.
  • Graphic design and analysis using desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Regular use of GIS software.
  • Responding to technical inquiries from other departments, the public, and management.
  • Organizing public involvement (writing letters, bulletins, press releases, newsletters, as well as preparing mailing lists and presentation materials).
  • Organizing public meetings; taking detailed minutes at staff and public meetings.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience:
  • University graduation in Urban Planning or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • A proven ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g. prioritize tasks, communicate expected delivery of items with staff, request help when needed, delegate and explain work to subordinate if required).
  • Experience related to the duties and responsibilities of the position is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to translate complex concepts into accurate, easily readable formats and ability to deal effectively with staff and the public are needed.
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills, including the ability to address land use, development, and financial/economic issues are required.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet prescribed deadlines and function as a team player is essential.
  • Ability to exercise sound decision-making and judgment working with minimal supervision is also essential.
  • Experience in working with multiple City Departments and outside agencies, such as BIAs, is required.
  • Demonstrated advanced graphics and computer skills in Microsoft Office, (word, excel, powerpoint), Adobe Creative Suite (illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), or other similar graphic software and, use of the Internet as a research and communication tool, are required.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS is required.
  • Knowledge of the City’s Financing Growth, other policies, programs and plans would also be an asset.
