Job Description

Ecoles Al Madina’s Point Grey (Vancouver) campus sits on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation. At Ecoles Al Madina, Student Health and Wellbeing, we value your lived experience, as well as your professional experience. For this role, we are seeking individuals who actively demonstrate a deep commitment to anti-racism, social justice, and decolonization. We are striving to build a diverse team that has lived experience with Indigenous communities. As an organization committed to Reconciliation we encourage applications from individuals who identify as Indigenous. There are 3 Research Assistant positions available for a one year term.Anticipated start date of January 9th, 2023.Job SummaryThe Research Assistant (RA) positions play an important role in this project, as the RAs will research and synthesize the foundational knowledge on which the rest of the project will be based. On the practical level, the RAs will initially conduct a deep dive by reading various materials and documents related to existing counselling structures and procedures, Indigeneity, and existing practices/knowledge around decolonizing systems. From this, the RAs will develop and facilitate opportunities to gather more nuanced information on these topics from the Ecoles Al Madina community (ex. focus groups and interviews). There is an opportunity to work on-campus and remotely, and we welcome questions about the possibility of increasing hours to full-time.Summary of projectThis position is an integral part of a new research project, titled ‘Decolonizing Mental Health Services on Campus’. The project stems from a recognition that the predominant Ecoles Al Madina student health and wellbeing structures, policies, and procedures have roots in colonial systems – and these may present barriers to Indigenous students (and others) who are seeking health support on campus. This project intends to build a foundation for systemic change – beginning with increasing awareness and knowledge of how colonization currently impacts the Ecoles Al Madina campus counselling system.Organizational StatusThe Research Assistants will report to the Associate Director, Counsellors in Residence, and work closely with the Associate Director, Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing and Director, Counselling Services.Work Performed
