The Host is outgoing, upbeat, and friendly and sets the tone for a welcoming and positive skateboarding environment. The Host will function as a mentor/role model on site displaying and encouraging safe practices at all times. The Host will also encourage other users/skaters to be good neighbours to the residents, parks, and businesses surrounding the Plaza area by skating safely to and from the Plaza, properly disposing of litter, and encouraging skaters to minimize any other negative impacts on the neighbourhood.Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesPerforming visual inspections of the Plaza to identify potential hazards and dealing with minor maintenance tasks to keep the area clean and tidy (ie. sweeping). Reporting other maintenance issues to the appropriate Park Board department.Demonstrating safe practices such as encouraging the use of helmets and other safety gear (Hosts are to wear helmets when skating).Welcoming new patrons to the Plaza to familiarize them with park etiquette, rules and regulations on the posted signs and pointing out key areas of interest.Promoting and assisting with the planning and organizing of authorized events happening at the plaza such as clean-up days, community events etc.Functioning as a skate instructor or otherwise supporting Roundhouse skateboard programs on site as requested.Acting as a communication link between the users and the Park Board. Host will be expected to identify and communicate issues or areas for improvements regarding the design/operation of the facility to the proper Park Board personnel.Identifying potential dangers (e.g. escalation of fights, drug use, etc.) and reporting these activities immediately by calling the police or the Park Board Skate Plaza Liaison to deal with the situation.Filling out a Log Book, taking statistics and providing First Aid when necessary.Check in with Roundhouse staff/Skate Plaza Liaison (phone call) before and after each session.Collaborating/working alongside another Skateboarding Host and with other City/Park Board staff as needed (ie. Park Rangers).QualificationsEducation and Experience:Completion of Grade 11 and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience in working with vulnerable populationsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Excellent verbal communication skillsAbility to deal tactfully and effectively with the publicAbility to skateboard/capacity to teach skateboarding to children and youthFirst Aid with CPR C is required (Standard First Aid/Emergency First Aid)Work Schedule:Approximately 8 hours/week. Hours are variable and will include shifts in the afternoons, evenings and weekends. The hours for this position are auxiliary and are governed by the collective agreement between the Vancouver Park Board and CUPE 15.A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position.
