Job Description

Duties
  • Prepare appraisal and consultation reports on all types of real estate including the most complex properties and other types of tangible assets.
  • Review and evaluate the validity of the appraisal reports submitted by taxpayers in support of their estimates.
  • Discuss and resolve difficult matters relating to valuation and participate in negotiations to reach a settlement acceptable to the Department and taxpayers.
  • Provide assistance to the Department of Justice in preparing cases for court by explaining valuation issues, reviewing the taxpayers position, preparing narrative reports and questions for cross examination of opposing expert witnesses.
  • Make court appearances as an expert witness in litigation that concerns real estate appraisals.
  • Conduct studies, research, and maintain databases in order to establish and keep up to date reference sources and general guidelines on appraising various categories of real estate and tangible property.
  • Provide service through promoting effective communication internally with the team, clients, management, and externally with taxpayers and their representatives.
  • Conduct property inspections.
  • Travel may be required throughout BC.

Candidates with foreign designations must have their designation confirmed by a recognized Canadian professional association at the time of the poster closing date.   • A minimum of two years commercial real estate appraisal experience within the past five years. Preference may be given to individuals with more experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of programs, especially Word and Excel.

Two sample narrative commercial appraisal reports will be requested of successful candidates to evaluate:
  • Knowledge and application of real estate appraising
  • Ability to prepare appraisal reports
  • Ability to present expert testimony
Virtual interview and/or testing sessions will be scheduled during weekdays. Candidates will be given appropriate notice and are expected to make themselves available for assessment when scheduled.
