Job Description

ERM is seeking an outstanding professional to join our Smithers, BC, Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, Saskatoon, SK, Toronto ON, Montreal QC, or Yellowknife, NT office as a Junior/ Intermediate Ecologist to support our Mining and Energy teams.As a member of the team, you will act as an ecologist in Canada, with capacity to conduct work in various jurisdictions across the country, primarily in western and northern Canada. This person will interact within a multidisciplinary community of toxicologists, hydrologists, freshwater and marine scientists (among other disciplines) and will become a member of an extensive team of global environmental and social experts through our biodiversity Technical Community.This role is designed for an organized ecologist with field experience in ornithology and/or herpetology and/or mammals with expertise in field sampling design, habitat classification, data entry, data analysis, and report writing. This opportunity offers the chance to build one’s career by contributing to baseline and compliance programs related to impact assessment certification, supporting field work for projects in western and northern Canada. The role will initially have a strong field component with opportunity to grow within the role to manage field programs and/or wildlife projects.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead field programs for wildlife projects including permit applications, field sampling design, ornithology surveys, herpetology surveys, habitat classification, data entry and organization, and reporting to clients and regulators.
  • Support field programs related to other wildlife and terrestrial ecology surveys (e.g. ungulate surveys, terrestrial ecosystem mapping, wetland classification, and plant sampling).
  • Lead projects in the office, either entire permitting or monitoring projects, or discrete portions of projects.
  • On occasion contribute to non-wildlife field programs (e.g., water, aquatics, noise and air quality sampling).
  • Support field programs in Canada, primarily British Columbia or northern Canada.
  • Write sections of environmental impact statements (EISs) and long term monitoring and compliance programs related to wildlife.
  • Work within client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with other ERM practitioners in support of biological needs.
  • Build collaborative relationships with other ERM employees.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree related to wildlife biology, preferably with experience in ornithology including experience conducting point counts, following provincial RIC standards and methodologies recommended by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
  • Minimum 2 years of working experience. Prior experience in government, and/or mining or oil and gas sectors are considered assets.
  • Ability and interest to learn and work on other species groups such as amphibians, small mammals, bats, and large mammals.
  • Positive attitude; excellent writing, communication, and time management skills; problem solver who enjoys self-directed work.
  • Statistical knowledge and ability to design or run existing code in R is an asset.
  • GIS knowledge and ability to map existing data and plan surveys in ARCGIS is an asset.
  • In addition to being motivated and a self-directed worker, ERM is seeking someone who works well in a team of wildlife biologists and other professionals.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple projects assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling as needed.
  • A person who seeks responsibility and follows through on their commitments.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability to work safety outdoors for extended periods in variable weather conditions and on challenging terrain.
  • Bilingual in English/French or English/Spanish an asset.
