The incumbent will act as an advocate for the needs of the department and has responsibility for ensuring that the IT operations remain robust, fit for purpose and are integrated with any centralized systems as required. This will include coaching business decision makers, understanding the impact and leading technical changes on business processes and leveraging common approaches and resources. This position works with leadership to understand and anticipate business system and project needs.ORGANIZATIONAL STATUSReports to the Manager, Zoology computing unit for strategic planning and for oversight on work performed, and to the Director, Operations for financial and general operating expenditure and administrative purposes. Provides leadership to all department IT users, including Faculty, Academic Visitors, Postdoctoral Fellows, Graduate Students, Zoology Department Administrative Staff, and the Zoology Department Head.WORK PERFORMEDEvaluates how existing server infrastructure satisfies requirements for robustness, complexity and succession planning. Plans, and implements new systems architecture through a combination of modernizing software, hardware and process, and by identifying services and infrastructure which may be outsourced or retired. Supports IT lifecycle and applies and follows appropriate change management methodologies and best practices.Monitors and maintains the physical server support infrastructure (batteries, cooling, etc) in the server rooms in the Biological Sciences and Biodiversity buildings. Attends to emergency issues, and coordinates maintenance and repairs with thirty-party data centre support.Monitors the UBC Information Security Office for updates in security requirements at the University level, and updates systems, policies and processes to be compliant with those requirements. Leads the implementation of systems design for optimal reliability, performance and efficiency. Ensures that best practices are maintained.Manages the existing Zoology infrastructure, including mail, web, file, print, compute, backup, and domain-name servers that support the department’s Linux, FreeBSD, Mac and Windows platforms and LANs responsible for monitoring all Zoology LANs. Investigates and analyses security, performance and reliability problems.Corrects problems through server- and network-level software. Initiates further problem-resolution action as required through notification of other personnel and technical staff.Responsible for the physical and logical security of ZCU servers and the prevention of data loss due to malfunctions or malicious action.Designs and implements anti-virus measures on the file- and mail-servers.Writes and updates documentation in collaboration with other staff members.Monitors recent developments in computer hardware, operating systems and communications technologies in order to provide up-to-date computing advice to the ZCU and members of the Zoology department.Leads the development of new applications and the integration of these applications with other UBC systems and services.Resolves complex application-related failures and defects. Performs in-depth troubleshooting using knowledge of network/server administration, internet protocols, database architecture and application configuration applying an advanced level of technical expertise and judgement to achieve desired work outcomes.Creates and implements custom reporting, and data analysis to support capacity planning.Conducts formal system audits and develops written procedures, standards and practices to ensure a high level of availability, security, data integrity, accountability and hardware/software compatibility.Performs other related duties as required.CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR Computers and networks are mission critical to faculty and staff for administration, teaching, research and cultural data production. Systemic problems resulting from poor execution of the work performed can result in massive loss of staff productivity and have critical consequences for project workflow. The computer system and associated network contains important information of financial, personnel, and research value. The incumbent shares in the responsibility to ensure that data security and integrity is maintained. Errors in judgment may have serious consequences for the loss of data, productivity, and University reputation.SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works independently under the broad direction and counsel of the Manager, Zoology Computing Unit. Consults the Manager for policy and strategy, and the Director, Operations for financial expenditures.SUPERVISION GIVEN Provides technical guidance and leadership, coaching, and mentoring to team members and departmental staff.Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. In-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in Computer Science preferred.Thorough knowledge of all operating systems common in heterogeneous academic computing environments: Linux, BSD, Windows, macOS. Experience in systems and application programming using both compiled and scripting languages. Familiarity with various desktop environments (X11-based, Windows, macOS). Experience installing and maintaining server hardware and software to provide shared resources over a network, and managing a virtual hosting environment.Intimate knowledge and experience managing TCP/IP networks and the underlying technologies (BGP, routing, etc.), as well as basic network support services (DNS, DHCP, proxies, etc.). Experience in network security issues, including intrusion detection, firewalls, access control, system hardening, malware and spam control based on a best-practice approach.Experience implementing, managing, maintaining, monitoring, securing, and trouble-shooting user services, including authentication (NIS, LDAP, AD), E-mail, web and web applications, printing, backup/recovery, storage (NFS, CIFS, NAS).Knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Wordpress and Drupal. Knowledge and experience of application development tools, especially web application programming using HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP. Experience managing SQL database systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Microsoft Access.Experience creating and/or modifying reports with various reporting tools.Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities while working under pressure to meet critical deadlines. Strong organizational and planning skills. Self-motivated; able to learn and work independently. Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts in plain English; skill in gaining buy-in from stakeholders.
