Staff - Non UnionJob CategoryM&P - AAPSJob ProfileAAPS Salaried - Information Systems and Technology, Level BJob TitleSystems CoordinatorDepartmentAdministrative Leadership | Department of Zoology | Faculty of ScienceCompensation Range$5,468.83 - $7,878.17 CAD MonthlyPosting End DateJuly 20, 2021Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the day prior to the Posting End Date above.Job End DateJob Description SummaryThe incumbent is part of a team charged with providing information processing tools and advice tailored to the needs of this department s administrators, researchers, instructors and grad students.Responsibilities include building, monitoring and maintaining the departmental administrative machines and all of the teaching and research computer labs; programming and maintaining web applications for general departmental workflow; troubleshooting from the network level down to the program code level; implementing, monitoring and advising about physical and logical computer security; assisting and advising about AV recording, editing and publishing; writing system and user documentation; and providing backup for the Manager and the Core Systems Administrator, Zoology Computing Unit (ZCU).Organizational StatusReports to the Manager of the Zoology Computing Unit and to the Zoology Administrator for administrative purposes. Determines solutions and delegates technical duties to Engineering Technician.Work Performed

  • plans, builds, configures and monitors the computing equipment in the departmental administrative offices ensuring the highest level of availability and performance. Responsible for the security and backups of the administrative machines
  • Programs and codes discrete but complex modules for use web applications.
  • plans, builds and administers the departmental research, teaching and mobile computer labs
  • programs web applications using the latest web technologies
  • Manages departmental web pages and creates content for the website
  • programs and maintains database systems
  • plans, configures and administers UNIX, Mac and Windows servers
  • reviews system capacities and makes recommendations for improvements and provides technical advice on system applications; advices on all areas of the department
  • advises researchers buying desktop computing and audiovisual equipment
  • Records talks, experiments and educational videos, edits and prepares for the intended audience
  • investigates and analyses performance and reliability problems. Initiates further problem-resolution action as required through notification of other personnel and technical staff.
  • advises in the development of operational systems and procedures to ensure that Zoology clients receive the highest levels of service.
  • Designs and writes documentation and trains Zoology faculty and staff in use of departmental and UBC network and administrative systems.
  • acts as backup for the Core Systems Administrator functions in the Zoology Computing Unit. Handles many aspects of ZCU functions during the absence of other personnel.
  • performs other related duties.
Consequence of Error/JudgementThe actions of this position affect administrative and academic functions of the Zoology department. This position deals directly with the availability, reliability and security of the departmental network used administration, teaching and research.High attention to detail is required, in addition to the need to maintain a broad knowledge of operating systems and networking protocols.Supervision ReceivedWorks independently according to objectives determined in conjunction with the Manager of the ZCU. According to priorities set by the Manager, determines own methods and procedures for accomplishing tasks. Keeps the Manager updated on workflow.Supervision GivenAdvises the ZCU s Core Systems Administrator to ensure that the hardware and software of lab and administrative machines are configured compatibly with the ZCU s infrastructure systems. May train/oversee faculty, staff, and graduate students in the effective use of software and equipment. Supervises any non-ZCU personnel hired to maintain or help with infrastructure systems.Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.University degree in Computer Science or graduation from a technical institute in the computer field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.The ability to design, implement, maintain and document complex programs and hardware configurations, in addition to having a detailed understanding of a broad range of system software, including UNIX, Windows and Macintosh OS s. Effective interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills, problem-solving and ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision. Ability to relate to a variety of user/clients. Ability to lift heavy boxes if required.
