Join our team and help us keep communities connected.Your OpportunityThe role of a Design Manager is to lead and deliver large, complex infrastructure projects, and help build our transportation sector business in the Lower Mainland. As a Design Manager, you will balance both technical and project management responsibilities, with a focus on leading multi-discipline teams to deliver high quality, innovative solutions. This will involve interfacing directly with clients, stakeholders, contractors and suppliers to represent the firm as our single point of contact on major projects. Your skill set allows you to effectively manage project deliverables, with a focus on budget/schedule controls, quality management, and team collaboration. In terms of execution of the work, you will be responsible for providing direction to the Stantec Team assigned to the project in preparing technical memos, reports, design drawings, technical specifications, and opinions of probable cost (Engineers’ Estimates). A Design Manager has the interpersonal skills to foster a positive, collaborative team environment and support a culture of safety. Through your broad civil or structural engineering background, you will apply your professional consulting abilities to lead major project development from RFQ and RFP preparation, to executing the project design and taking responsible charge of Stantec’s work products. Your expertise with alternative procurement delivery and understanding of the local heavy civil and transportation market will be critical assets in your success at this role.The scope of this assignment will require a variety of office and potential field tasks, which may include planning, preliminary design, value engineering, detailed design, tender/construction support, project controls, proposal writing, and quality management. You will have the opportunity to develop innovative and sustainable design solutions working alongside an award-winning design team in order to deliver rewarding projects. An ability to maintain the big picture throughout the design process and take responsibility for meeting client expectations in a dynamic environment will help build a long-lasting career at Stantec.Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership for project execution teams of up to 20-40 transportation specialists, including discipline leads, junior engineers, design technologists, and CAD technicians.
  • Prepare and implement project plans, including safety, quality, team resourcing, sustainability, and work methodology.
  • Take responsible charge of design tasks, including production of engineering drawings, technical specifications, opinions of probable costs (engineer’s estimates), engineering reports and required applications to regulatory agencies.
  • Be responsible for the review and sealing of own projects or the work of the others.
  • Play a key role in the execution of design and construction of infrastructure projects.
  • Facilitate the permitting process of projects, which may require meeting with clients, contractors, stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and reviewing agency personnel.
  • Chair and lead project meetings, both internally and with the client, to review project and proposal milestones, confirm resource needs, review client expectations, facilitate inter-office work collaboration, and plan team building activities.
  • Learn and implement project management and financial management software (Oracle Based) to meet project budget and schedule targets.
  • Lead proposal development and project execution for heavy civil infrastructure projects such as the following: roadway/highway improvements and widening, traffic intersections, retaining walls, bridges, railway grade separations, interchanges, and marine terminals.
QualificationsYour Capabilities and Credentials:
  • Strong communication skills, including an aptitude for value-based leadership and people management.
  • Emotional intelligence to work with a broad range of technical experts, government officials, legal counsels, First Nations groups, public stakeholders, and other project partners.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of infrastructure projects, including conventional and alternative delivery methods for public and private clients.
  • Ability to effectively discuss and make presentations related to project plans, milestone updates, and technical issues with clients and stakeholders.
  • Possesses excellent time-management skills; thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Comprehensive understanding of design codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions; specifically the CSA S6-19 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code with BC Supplement to CHBDC, Transportation Association of
  • Canada (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, and Master Municipal Construction Documents Association (MMCD) standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite.
  • General background in relevant design software, which may include AutoCAD, SAP2000, CSiBridge, Civil3D, GIS, MathCAD, and MS Excel Macros.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related field. Demonstrated experience on large, multi-discipline design build or alternative procurement delivery projects.
  • A master’s degree, project management professional certification, and focus on structural engineering assignments would all be considered a plus for this role.
  • Must be a Licensed Professional Engineer with registration in BC.
  • Minimum of 12-15 years of relevant experience.
