This is a frontline, full-time position that works directly with diverse, multiculturalyoung adults (ages 17 to 29) who are newcomers to Canada. The Young Adult Settlement Worker organizes andfacilitate all settlement activities related to working with vulnerable young adults ages 17-29. This includes socialgroup programs, volunteer programs, employment and/or academic support services, drop-in communityconnection programs, special events and workshops, as well as one-on-one support. This position is part of SVNH’ssettlement team, which will liaise with IRCC eligible clients with the intention of providing a full range ofsettlement, adaptation, service support, resources, and referrals to promote self-advocacy and full participation fornewcomers in Canadian Society.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide group social programming for newcomer young adults to ensure they have a safe space to be
connected to South Vancouver, build friendships, and seek resources/referrals for mental health, physicalhealth and/or recreation as needed
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate community connections activities and out trips
  • Plan, organize, facilitate group volunteer and social-emotional engagement opportunities
  • Outreach and recruit for programs via school presentations, community events, and meetings with service
providers
  • Prepare and create event and program flyers, posters, and brochures
  • Identify clients’ settlement needs and goals to create settlement plans, case manage, one-to-one para-
counsel or crisis counsel, and ongoingly assess newcomer young adult clients in partnership with parents,family members, schools, and service providers. This may include: transition plans for leaving high school,help with accessing financial aid, support with scholarship applications, finding employment, mentalhealth, and/or adult education
  • Connect newcomer young adults to community organizations and service agencies
  • Collaborate and network with groups, agencies, schools and government departments and other
stakeholders currently working with immigrant youth communities to discuss issues and trends, co-facilitate programs, and develop new initiatives to meet clients needs
  • Evaluate and keep records of client profiles and key statistics including input into government required
iCare database system, including intake forms, narrative, and statistical reports
  • Apply for grants to enhance settlement programs
  • Support the development of newcomer youth in the Canadian multi-cultural context
  • Maintain information and support resources
  • Adheres to confidentiality and privacy policies
  • Promote SVNH programs and services

  • Provide support to Neighbourhood House sponsored events and activities
  • Attend staff meetings/retreats/ training
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with immigrant youth ages 17 to 29 in a multicultural environment
  • Work and/or lived experience with newcomer/immigrant/refugee vulnerable clients facing multiple
barriers
  • Demonstrated understanding of the immigration process and issues affecting immigrants and refugees
  • Demonstrated understanding of intercultural knowledge and BIPOC awareness
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural team environment and independently
  • Post secondary education in youth work, social work, community support, multicultural work, or related
field in combination with experience in the field
  • Knowledge of group social programming and ability to facilitate programs that encompasses building peer-
to-peer connections, group volunteering, and out trips
  • Knowledge of basic counselling skills and crisis intervention skills
  • Knowledge of employment skills and ability to provide employment support services
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, communication, and community development skills
  • Experience facilitating groups and designing workshops
  • Oral and written proficiency in English and another language (Tagalog, Punjabi, Hindi, etc.)
  • Successful criminal record search
  • Class 4 Driver’s License an asset
