Job SummaryReporting to the Vice President of Claims, Legalamp; Corporate Affairs (CLCA), the incumbent is responsible for all aspects of claims arising out of our Comprehensive Liability, Propertyamp; Vehicle programs.The Senior Commercial Insurance Adjuster provides input in the development of objectives of the Department and supervises a Claims Administrator.Unit MandateThe Claims Unit manages all insurance claims, and directly adjusts claims under MEARIE’s Liability program. Job Activities/TasksClaims Adjusting

  • Evaluate and investigate third-party liability claims and provide denial, defense and settlement strategies for liability claims
  • Set, monitor and consistently re-assess reserve levels on each liability claim to ensure reserve adequacy
  • Liaise with the third-party administrators providing adjusting support on all vehicle and property claims, to ensure excellent customer service is delivered to all Members
  • Ensuring the handling and management of all claims is consistent with internal claims protocols
  • Manage the assessment of coverage under the MEARIE insurance policies and provide recommendations to the VP -CLCA with respect to any potential denial and the rationale behind any potential denial
  • Manage overall claims processing (investigations, proper file composition, setting reserves and payment of claims, etc.) in a timely manner to ensure top quality service to MEARIE’s members, and diligent, effective operation of the Claims unit
  • Ensure settlement is obtained, where necessary, in a timely manner consistent with established reserves and internal claims protocols
  • Keeping abreast of risk management and claims management issues related to the electricity utility industry
  • Oversee litigation management process and obtain timely reports from external counsel to set budgets and strategies to achieve best possible resolution.
  • Attend as a representative of MEARIE at legal proceedings, where necessary (i.e. mediations, examinations, pre-trial hearings; etc.)
  • Convene and actively participate in policy coverage and liability discussions
  • Providing statistical information on claims to subscribers and outside organizations
  • Responding to member inquiries on coverage, statistical information, and policy provisions.
  • Establishing good working relationships with internal client groups, external service providers and/or consultants to ensure effective and efficient management of customer service
Unit Management
  • Working with the Vice President to formulate, support and implement long-term strategies for the department
  • Overseeing and managing work carried out by staff and external consultants
  • Developing and managing the unit’s budget.
  • Provide effective leadership by motivating, coaching, and mentoring the Claims Administrator.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement strategies for loss containment, expense control, and streamlining of processes
  • Providing valuable input and insight into future business decisions.
  • Represent The MEARIE Group at various functions, including the participation in and/or delivery of presentations
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements
  • Post secondary diploma/degree
  • Possessing or working toward a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation
Skills, Knowledgeamp; Experience
  • 5+ years of recent experience as a Liability Adjuster on complex, technical commercial claims, ideally within the utility industry, or utility-related sector, or a similar industry, is a must.
  • Knowledge of electricity sector a significant asset.
  • Familiarity with vehicle and property adjusting would be a plus
  • Preferable to have practical and recent experience providing Managerial oversight/ Supervisory experience/coaching staff in a Claims unit, or aspiration to develop such
  • Working knowledge of contract and tort law (relevant acts, regulations, and policies) is mandatory
  • Good investigation and problem-solving skills (i.e. complex losses, dealing with fraud, etc.)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Motivated, high energy team player
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office suite)
Working Conditions
  • Professional office environment, in Vaughan
  • Some modest travel within Ontario required
