This is a rare opportunity for a full time permanent Marine Biologist position working in the Coast Area.Reporting to the Manager of Marine and Coastal Resources, Regional Operations Division, Coast Area of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD), this position is the lead ministry expert in marine biology and, on behalf of the provincial government, supports the development and implementation of marine policies and plans, including a new Coastal Marine Strategy for BC and ongoing initiatives such as the Marine Plan Partnership (MaPP), the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA) plan and Marine Protected Area (MPA) network planning for the Northern Shelf. The position is responsible for forging strong working relationships with First Nations, government officials, private sector representatives, and other stakeholders and providing technical expertise to advance certain elements of marine policy development and planning. Bio.) in British Columbia with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) or eligible for registration as a professional within six months of employment.Note: To meet the ‘within 6 months of employment’ requirement, both education and experience requirements of the CAB must be attained at time of application and may be requested by the panel. To assess your ability to meet these criteria, please visit the CAB website academic self-assessment tool.A PhD degree in Biology or a related field determined by the British Columbia College of Applied Biology (CAB), PLUS at least three years of recent, related experience; ORA Master’s degree in Biology or a related field determined by the British Columbia College of Applied Biology (CAB), PLUS at least five years of recent, related experience.A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license or higher.

  • Recent, related experience MUST include:
Experience establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with First Nations, other governments/agencies, professionals and managers on natural resource management issues.Experience leading major projects of large scale and complexity with multiple project delivery components.Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:A PhD degree in Biology or a related field determined by the British Columbia College of Applied Biology (CAB).Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation, regulations and policies.Experience conducting stakeholder and/or public consultation processes.Experience working in the coastal marine environment in British Columbia.Willingness:Must be willing to travel frequently.Must be willing to conduct occasional field work which may include: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot; short stays in rough camp conditions; and outdoor work in all weather conditions.Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including carrying equipment.Please include your registration number with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) within your application, as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with CAB.
