Job Description

Position: Community Youth Program CoordinatorOpen to: Internal and external applicants. Please note only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.Apply by November 15, 2022 at 11:59 pm. The start date for this position will be late November 2022.Reports to: Prevention Co-DirectorPosition Summary: The Community Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of VSAC’s Project Respect community- and school-based initiatives, including the delivery of intervention and prevention workshops to youth and adults (e.g., anti-racism safer-braver spaces for teachers and adult caregivers, bystander intervention for Black youth, sexualized violence prevention for youth and safer spaces for teachers), Project Respect Youth Council, and youth-led social action projects.Salary/Benefits: BCGEU Grid level 14, $28.39 per hour, 28 hours per week and up to 35 hours per week, depending on funding and seasonal need. This is a term position ending September 30, 2023, with the possibility of renewal dependent on grant funding. Includes a three-month probationary period.Location: With Covid-19, Prevention staff work in a hybrid model both from home and the VSAC office. The successful candidate must be available to work remotely and occasionally in the office and various community spaces in and around Victoria, BC. VSAC’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee has a Safety Plan to guide Covid-19 protocols and practices for employees in the office. This plan includes medical screening (self-assessment), office entry protocols, occupancy limits, and transmission reduction.Hours: Daytime, some evenings and weekends.VSAC is committed to creating intentional spaces for equity-deserving applicants, and this position is rooted in anti-racism work. We especially invite applications from Indigenous, ACB (African, Caribbean, and Black), and People of Colour communities, persons with disabilities, LGBQ+ persons, Trans and gender diverse persons, and others with lived experience, skills, and knowledge to engage productively with Black and other equity-deserving communities.Job ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Prevention Co-Director, the Community Youth Program Coordinator collaborates daily with other Prevention Team members (School Program Educator / Coordinator and Research Manager). The Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, and evaluation of VSACs Project Respect community-based initiatives. This role involves working with existing and new community partners to facilitate dynamic, youth-led, sexualized violence and anti-racism social action and prevention education.The Coordinator will prioritize programming that engages and responds to the diverse realities of youth who experience disproportionate amounts of sexualized violence, including sexual assault and overlapping forms of violence (colonialism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, fatphobia, etc.).The Coordinator will provide leadership and collaborate with community organizations and youth to organize youth-led programming. This programming could be wide-ranging depending on the interests of the youth but could include arts- and land-based social actions, discussions, research, and programming.Job responsibilities include: coordinating, developing, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating VSACs community youth programming and related research activities. Examples of this work include:Programming

  • Developing programming in collaboration with the Youth Council, Black Youth Empowerment group, youth in the community, and organizations serving youth.
  • Developing a workshop curriculum that is informed by anti-oppressive, trauma-informed best-practices in the field of prevention education.
  • Facilitating and organizing the programming with participating youth and establishing budgets and timelines.
  • Generating a sense of ownership, autonomy, and empowerment by the youth
  • Maintaining accurate and timely records, statistics, and reports for grant reporting and program evaluation.
  • Working with the Research Manager to design and implement assessment tools to measure the effectiveness of the community programming.
  • Assisting the Prevention Co-Director with funding proposals.
  • Maintaining current knowledge in the field of sexualized violence, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive work through reading, ongoing professional development, and other activities.
Group Facilitation and Support
  • Facilitating youth meetings, holding intentional spaces with youth while exploring issues, hopes, and actions around gender-based, sexualized, and racialized violence.
  • Providing guidance, support, and resources to youth participating in Black Youth Empowerment and/or in the Youth Council before, during, and after youth meetings and sessions.
Community Relations
  • Building relationships with youth and youth-serving organizations to organize community programming.
  • Ensuring a clear understanding of the partnership responsibilities that will foster long-term benefits for youth and the wider community.
  • Promoting the programming through website, social media, and other online and in-person mediums.
Leadership/Management
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising Prevention Educators in collaboration with the School Program Educator / Coordinator.
  • Engaging in supervision/consultation with the Prevention Co-Director.
  • Participating constructively as a member of the Prevention team and VSAC as a whole.
Education/Experience (Qualifications)
  • Three (3) years recent volunteer/work/lived experience in socially-oriented community organizing
  • One (1) year of:
  • supervisory/recruiting/training experience
  • administrative experience,
  • program planning, delivery, and evaluation in the area of anti-racism and/or prevention education,
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (including work, community, and lived experience).
  • Experience facilitating groups and using interactive facilitation techniques, in-person and online (virtual).
  • Previous experience coordinating groups and working collaboratively with youth ages 12-19.
  • Minimum two (2) years of post-secondary education in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences or a related field AND/OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Specialized training or education in anti-oppressive, anti-racism, decolonized and/or gender-based violence prevention.
Job Skills (Abilities)
  • Experience (work/education/volunteer/lived-experience) in intersectional, anti-racism and anti-oppressive spaces with a strong understanding of how sexualized violence is connected to and rooted in multiple overlapping forms of systemic violence, such as: racism, colonialism, sexism/misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia, etc.
  • Ability to independently initiate and complete tasks, as well as personal and professional development.
  • Experience working with young people of Black communities and/or young people of IBPOC and/or equity-deserving communities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to facilitate complex conversations with young people about their experiences of violence across their diverse contexts in a trauma-informed and empowering manner.
  • Strong teamwork skills, including working well with co-facilitators, and giving and receiving constructive feedback as part of working collaboratively with adults and youth.
  • Experience with creating visually appealing products translating data sets and research findings.
  • Experience in promotional tasks through website, social media, and other online and in-person mediums.
  • Experience in developing culturally relevant and safe programming for youth of diverse communities and identities
  • Knowledge and understanding of anti-oppressive, trauma-informed best-practices
  • Skills in administration, establishing budgets and timelines, accurate and timely record keeping, statistics compiling, report writing
  • Experience in grant reporting and program evaluation, designing and implementing assessment tools to measure the effectiveness of programming.
