Junior Hybrid Infrastructure System Administrator Co-opOpen to students registered in a recognized co-op program onlyBC Pension Corporation, Victoria BC

  • Duration: Summer & Fall 2022 (May to December)
  • Location: Victoria (our office is situated on the Selkirk Waterfront on the Gorge Inlet. Enjoy stunning views of downtown Victoria and the Olympic mountains and take advantage of the nearby Galloping Goose Regional Trail for walking and biking).
  • Salary: $1,590.33 bi-weekly (for students working towards a diploma or bachelors degree) or $1,869.36 (for students working towards a post-graduate degree)
  • Grant: As part of our inVESTED scholarship program, you may be eligible for reimbursement up to a maximum of $1,000 per four-month work term to cover the cost of co-op work term tuition fees.
  • Hybrid Work Model: Employees are supported to work part of their time from home and part of their time on campus to encourage flexibility, performance and connection.
  • Skills for Success Program: Engage with other co-op students in a monthly virtual event designed to build connection and community while developing skills to support your success.
  • Team: The newly formed Hybrid Infrastructure team is responsible for both traditional on-premises infrastructure (compute, storage, network in data centres) as well as the future Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) in Azure supporting our strategic direction. This team is part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) branch who are responsible for providing computer systems and technology information management strategies, standards and solutions in support of BC Pension Corporations operational and administrative objectives.
The Job ResponsibilitiesBC Pension Corporation is on a journey to move from traditional on-premises infrastructure services to the Cloud. Today, we look after servers, networking equipment, and storage in two data centers in BC. We are migrating our workloads to Microsoft Azure and other cloud providers. With the increase in cybercrime activity, we are also improving how systems are upgraded and vulnerabilities addressed to mitigate these ongoing risks.This IT Operations role will offer work experience with all aspects of IT Operations that will be 100% transferrable to other industries. Students will use traditional tools as well as new cloud-based tools specifically in the Azure space as part of this role.
  • Incident, Change, Problem Management
  • MS Teams Meeting Room device setup, maintenance, and support
  • Tier-3 Support of Microsoft 365 applications like Teams, Defender, Endpoint Manager, Azure AD, Exchange
  • Active Directory
  • Device Management (images, drivers, operating systems)
  • Testing and Quality Control of endpoints (laptops/desktops)
  • Wiring Closet patching and maintenance
  • Wireless Access Point support
  • Monitoring and addressing Application Health for M365 application
  • Technology testing (s/w, h/w, OS, f/w)
  • Technology research
  • Miscellaneous Project participation (i.e. SharePoint Online implementation)
  • Operational Support that involves data analysis with excel, pivot tables, and trends
Learning OutcomesThe successful candidate can expect to gain experience in the following areas:
  • Experience with ITIL concepts like Incident, Problem, and Change Management
  • Use of Microsoft 365 and Azure Administration Portals
  • Hands-on experience with physical cabling, wireless access points, and switches
  • Exposure to Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Administration & Operations experience with Microsoft applications like Endpoint Manager, Autotune, Defender ATP, Always on VPN, Teams, Onedrive, SharePoint Online
RequirementsThis opportunity is available to 3rd or 4th year Computer Science and Software/Computer Engineering students and graduate level students studying Computer Engineering/Science or related fields. You will bring your enthusiasm to contribute, willingness to learn new skills and tools, strong sense of ownership, and your disciplined approach to solving and managing problems.Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas would be an asset:
  • Windows 10 Operating System (OS)
  • Comfortable with managing the settings of a laptop
  • Understand how to patch OS and update device drivers
  • Building and executing test scripts
  • Use of Service Desk software
  • Writing and reviewing technical documentation
