Job Description

JOB POSTINGMaterial HandlerEmployment Type: Full Time – UnionBusiness Unit: Island Plate & SteelLocation: Sidney, British ColumbiaReporting to: Operations ManagerWage Rate: $22.07/hourHours of Work: 40 hours/weekWork Setting: ManufactureNumber of Vacancies: 1Island Plate & Steel, a Ralmax Group Company, has an immediate opening for a full-time entry level Material Handler on the Victoria, British Columbia. Under general supervision, the Material Handlers primary focus will be on supporting our steel plate processing operations. The Material Handler will work closely with our Burner to maximize our plasma cutting machine’s productivity. This goal will be attained by: aiding in the off-loading of the machine, reloading of it, marking finished pieces as needed, staging material, packaging outgoing materials, receiving incoming shipments, and other tasks as assigned. It is expected that approximately 50% of the Material Handler’s time will be spent working with the Burner. The remained of the Material Handler’s time will be split between assorted shop tasks such as shop clean-up, bandsaw operation, etc.What we offer:

Responsibilities:
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment
  • Cleans around work areas
  • Delivers parts and or materials to work areas as required
  • Adhering and comprehension of prescribed safety procedures pertaining to both federal/provincial rules and regulations
  • Operation of hand and power tools and willingness to learn how to operate various types of equipment and machinery
  • Cleaning & fueling of shop service vehicles
  • Assist trades people with their tasks when required
  • Empty scrap bins and refuse containers
  • Follow oral and written instructions; record and maintain accurate records.
  • Other duties within scope of the position, as assigned
Qualifications:Education and Experience
  • Skilled labourer work experience in civil/industrial construction and utilities
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to work well with others and independently
  • Ability to maintain a reliable and positive team attitude
  • Willingness to learn various types of equipment and machinery
  • Strong work ethic and the willingness to show up and learn
Requirements:
  • Valid class 5 BC drivers license
  • Knowledge and understanding of OHS, WCB regulations and legislation.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required
  • Ability to work within a team environment to meet tight deadlines
  • Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time, able to lift/carry up to 80 lbs, kneel, climb ladders, and walk on varied terrain
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
Work Conditions:
  • Travel to off-site locations may be required
  • Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.

  • Hazards associated with the trade
  • Work both indoors and outdoors
