ONC monitors the west and east coasts of Canada and the Arctic to continuously deliver data in real-time for scientific research and discovery and technological innovation. ONC is a Major Science Initiative funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and is governed as a not-for-profit society that operates world-class innovative cabled observatories on behalf of the University of Victoria.ONC operates and manages innovative cabled observatories that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to various scientific instruments located in coastal, deep-ocean, and Arctic environments. ONC’s cable arrays host thousands of sensors distributed in, on and above the seabed along with mobile and land-based assets strategically located, instruments that address key scientific and policy issues (subsea earthquakes and tsunamis, ocean acidification, marine biodiversity, etc.) within a wide range of environments.ONCs Observatory Physical Operations division is accountable for ensuring that ONC meets its primary role as a science facility through the uninterrupted flow of data from the ONC networks. Observatory Physical Operations designs, builds, installs, and maintains sub-sea, mobile and shore-based infrastructure and instruments as the first link of the data chain.Observatory Physical Operations utilizes a team-based, client-focused approach that promotes a safe work environment and fosters an environment of mutual respect, cooperation and support.The division includes three teams and has its base of operations at the Marine Technology Centre (MTC) in Sidney. The Field Services team maintains, operates, repairs, troubleshoots all observatories, mobile systems, and sensor networks. The Testing & Development team maintains ONC’s infrastructure, develops and designs equipment, prepares instruments for deployment, and participates in expeditions. The Operations Support team supports the other two teams through the management of the MTC facility, provides equipment maintenance, inventory management, shipping and receiving equipment, logistics support, purchasing, and administrative support and workplace safetyThis position reports to the Senior Operations Support Specialist (SOSS)This position, as with all Observatory Physical Operations positions, will on a rotating basis serve as the Safety Coordinator whose role it is to coordinate internal tasks required to ensure safety equipment, training and records are in place to meet operations workplace safety requirements. The Safety Coordinator sits on the ONC Joint Local Safety Committee.Job RequirementsThe successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree, or a technical diploma from a college or technical institute. Additional specialized training in the areas of shipping and receiving, global logistics or inventory management and at least 2 years of experience is required.An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.Additional Experience requirements:
