At Lafarge Canada Inc., safety comes first, collaboration matters and diversity is celebrated with people who share our desire to continually make our materials better.Do you have the drive, the skills, and the passion to join usOverview:The Terminal Assistant position at the Victoria Cement Terminal requires that each employee perform the specific duties of unloading barges, loading bulk cement trucks, perform minor or major maintenance and various housekeeping tasks.The following duties may be performed alone or in conjunction with other employees and/or contractors who are working at the terminal.Responsibilities:Unloading Barges:

• Follow established unloading procedures in written and verbal format.
• Walk bend, stoop and crawl on vessels for distances of fifteen feet or more, which also may be constantly moving because of changing water conditions and weather.
• Perform minor and/or major equipment repairs involving the use of various hand and power tools requiring dexterity in both hands. Mechanical work also requires lifting parts and equipment up to 50lbs.
• Climb 10 to 20 foot ladders to open hatches which may weigh 50lbs and may require additional leverage or mechanical assistance in order to be opened.

Terminal Housekeeping:

• Follow written and verbal instructions.
• Sweeping and shoveling spilled cement and other trash into barrels, dumpsters or wheelbarrows which must be moved to disposal containers.
• Climb up to 100 stairs to get to the top of all silos for access to roof and equipment for maintenance and cleaning.
• Sweeping, dusting and cleaning surfaces in lunchroom, office and bathrooms.

Loading Bulk Cement Trucks:

• Follow established unloading procedures in written and verbal format.
• Climb up and down stairs two to ten times per hour depending on shipping volumes and equipment performance.
• Communicate pleasantly and effectively with customers, sales and logistics personnel using a variety of communication mediums such as phone calls, emails or fax messages.
• Clean and remove trash from the bulk loading station.
• Operate all loading equipment in a safe and approved manner.
• Walk over uneven terrain and spilled cement.

Structure:

• Oversight: This role will report directly to the BC Terminals Manager.
• Supervision: This role will be under the supervision of the Senior Victoria Terminal Supervisor, who will ensure operational and safety best practices are maintained.
• Hourly Compensation: You will be paid a probationary hourly rate of $23.00 as established by the probationary pay scale outlined in the collective agreement. Payments being made via direct deposit on a bi-weekly basis. This position is eligible for overtime.
• Hours of Work: Your hours of work will be 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). This position requires flexibility and some overtime will be required.
• Vacation: Upon completion of continuous employment with the Lafarge for one year, you are entitled to two weeks of vacation (10 days). All vacation must be taken in the year that it is earned.
• Benefits & Pension: You will be eligible to participate in the Lafarge Benefits & Pension Program, consistent with the provisions established in the collective agreement of the Victoria Terminal location. You will be eligible for benefits the first day of the month following 90 calendar days of employment.

Qualifications:Specific Accountabilities:

• Maintain good employee relations and promote a harmonious working environment within the sales and logistics team as well as other LafargeHolcim product lines.
• To operate the terminal in a safe and efficient manner. Administer all Federal Occupational Health and Safety programs and ensure that all Company safety standards are met.
• Work along with Federal, Provincial and Municipal representatives to ensure the terminal is operating in accordance with all laws.
• Ensure compliance with Federal, Provincial and local environmental regulations and maintain a good corporate image in the community.
