Job Description

JOB POSTING - UNIONIZED POSITIONPOSITION TITLE: Labourer – CasualPosition SummaryThis unionized position does not have a regular schedule and hours of work are dependent on the need for position relief during work absences or to meet additional workload. Reporting to the Manager of Protective Services and the Manager of Agriculture and Environmental Services, respectively, the Casual Labourer is responsible for fulfilling the duties of a Building Attendant – Labourer III or Transfer Station Operator II, as required. Other duties may be assigned.The Building Attendant, under the direction of the Manager of Protective Services, is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective cleaning of Westlock County and its premises. They will be required to perform tasks such as vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting. The Building Attendant will be responsible for ensuring that their required tasks are completed thoroughly, on time, and with minimal supervision.Reporting to the Manager of Agriculture & Environmental Services, the Transfer Station Operator is responsible for directing, receiving, coordinating, and supervising the delivery of waste material at Transfer Station locations, and other duties as assigned.The incumbent works reasonably independently on a variety of assigned tasks. Various Provincial, Federal, and Municipal legislation, regulations and policies must be adhered to.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties and responsibilities of the Casual Labourer include, but are not limited to, the following:Building Attendant

  • Clean premises ensuring procedures are followed for the proper use, care, and handling of cleaning and disinfectant products
  • Clean, stock and supply designated facility areas including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and restroom cleaning
  • Remove trash and recycling
  • Work with and understand several cleaning products and chemicals ensuring the correct products are being used for the correct job and storing cleaning products and supplies in a safe and orderly manner
  • Report and monitor repairs and replacements for any equipment or supplies as needed, when encountered on the job performing the duties
  • Maintain an adequate stock of materials and supplies
  • Ensure compliance with Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) and any other required legislation regarding chemical products
  • Complete logbooks as necessary on material data sheets
  • Complete required training, including required health and safety training
Transfer Station Operator
  • Manage the Transfer Station resources assigned to the areas of responsibility including receiving waste and recycling, directing disposal locations, and organization of household appliances
  • Inspect waste loads for compliance and any environmental issues
  • Assisting with unloading, opening, and closing of bins, snow removal from bins, transporting recycle trailer to and from each site, and daily maintenance of site including picking up loose waste
  • Foster a working environment focused on continuous improvement and exceptional customer service
  • Provide guidance and direction to customers for waste delivery while on location and ensure customers are following all traffic safety rules
  • Documentation and paperwork with regards to amounts and contents of waste loads to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and transfer stations rules
Other Duties:
  • Ensure that Westlock County’s Health and Safety Program as well as Occupational Health & Safety’s standards are followed
  • Promotes a safe work environment ensuring compliance with all government regulations and Health & Safety policies and practices
  • Reports to the supervisor all Occupational Health and Safety related injuries, property damage or suspected situations of unhealth or unsafe actions
  • This position may be called to perform duties as required by the Director of Emergency Management during a State of Local Emergency
  • Complies with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing demonstrating listening skills, interpersonal skills, and excellent customer service skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license with an acceptable drivers’ abstract.
  • Ability to safely operate a truck and trailer including hookup and backup of trailer
  • Ability to work in all types of weather and working conditions outdoors
  • Previous experience will be considered an asset
Working Conditions
  • Repetitive tasks
  • Varying levels of physical effort, including moderate lifting (up to 50 lbs.), walking, standing, pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, climbing, bending, stretching, kneeling, crouching, driving, and carrying are required. Repeated motion of cleaning tasks is also involved; physically able to push vacuum cleaner and mop for extended periods of time
  • Frequent exposure to chemicals which may be hazardous
  • Required to work evenings while working alone, working outside of normal business hours
  • Exposure to various weather conditions; periods include inclement weather conditions of extreme cold and heat
  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials
  • Frequent interaction with public
  • Driving County vehicle
  • Possible exposure to wildlife
  • Required to spend long hours concentrating which will require attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
  • Required to meet deadline which may cause stress
  • Required to travel to different work sites
HOURS OF WORK: Casual work, non-scheduled hours will typically occur evenings between 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., or daytime 12:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Overtime hours may be requested occasionally.COMPENSATION: This is a Union position therefore wages are as per Appendix I of the current Collective Agreement.CLOSING DATE: When a suitable candidate is hired.Job Type: CasualSalary: $21.89-$27.04 per hourSchedule:
  • Day shift
  • Evening shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability
