Job Description

Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC), a joint venture of the Stern Group and West Fraser Timber Company Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of premium paper products. Located in Whitecourt, and operating with a non-unionized workforce, the firm’s paper mill—the first in Alberta—produces paper of such high quality that it has become the standard by which other paper products manufactured in North America are measured. The company is a successful, well-financed, progressive organization that is regarded as one of the best companies in the paper industry.We are currently recruiting for the role of Director, Environment. This position reports to the General Manager and will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental strategies and initiatives at ANC. The role will involve ensuring compliance with provincial environmental regulations, working with regulators on permitting and policy, and envisioning future environmentally-focused undertakings along with grant applications. A key to this role is establishing relationships with stakeholders, including government entities, Indigenous communities, and conservation organizations. Responsibilitiesamp; Duties

  • Develop and implement the company #39;s environmental strategy, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with provincial environmental regulations.
  • Build key relationships with stakeholders, such as all levels of government (AEP/AER), Indigenous, regulators, industry, and the Whitecourt community.
  • Conduct environmental assessments, audits, and impact studies to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for minimizing the organization #39;s environmental footprint.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainable practices into business operations, including waste management, energy efficiency, water conservation, and emissions reduction, while considering local regulations and available grant opportunities.
  • Monitor and track environmental performance indicators, analyze data, and prepare reports to evaluate progress, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Identify and research grant opportunities available for environmental projects and initiatives, including those related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, pollution prevention, and conservation.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications, ensuring alignment with project goals, compliance with grant requirements, and effective communication of the organization #39;s environmental initiatives and expected outcomes.
  • Understand and support the ANC Power division, including engaging with the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).
  • Establish relationships with trade associations such as Alberta Direct Connect Consumer Association (ADC) and the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA).
What you will bring to the role:
  • Post-secondary education in related field.
  • 8+ years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Established networking and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills that keep the interests of all stakeholders balanced.
  • Willingness to be on-call/reachable after hours and on weekends, as required.
  • Appetite for learning and desire to process improve along the way.
  • Have the aptitude and drive to envision beneficial change and lead it through to completion.
  • Basic understanding of paper mill production and/or general manufacturing is desired, but not required.
