Job Description

Position function: The Recreation/Community Inclusion staff member reports to the Supervisor of the Small Option Homes located in Yarmouth (two). They are accountable for the design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of person-centered care related to participants recreational, vocational and leisure wellbeing, with a focus of community inclusion. They develop with the participant the individualized recreation plan that will achieve the goals that align with the mission, vision and values of the organization. They are able to work independently, sometimes without direct supervision. They are motivated and organized. This position requires some evening, weekend and holiday work depending on activities/functions and participant needs. Must be able to work in an environment that have plants and animals, as well as working outdoors. Must be able to bend, lift, and stretch as required for job performance. MMCG provides services for adults who may have physical limitations, intellectual disabilities, mental health illness or dementia who, from time to time when upset, may exhibit behavior issues.Work Performed:

  • Initiate, plan, develop and implement group and individual programs based on participants interests and goals.
  • Continuously collaborate with participants, staff, family members and others involved to identify, develop, and implement meaningful activities, events, and simple pleasures for their enjoyment to help improve their quality of life.
  • Communicate timely and accurate information with interdisciplinary team. Participate in discussions/meetings as required.
  • Meet with participants and complete assessments and re-assessments.
  • Create and maintain a positive atmosphere of warmth, and personal interest with the participants.
  • Spends one-on-one time with participants.
  • Lead large event activities and take responsibility for any associated equipment, vehicles and supplies and coordination of volunteers.
  • Assume responsibility for participant care and safety during activities and outings led by Recreation.
  • Partner and co-operate with staff, participants, and families to promote effective communication.
  • Promote a positive working relationship with and among other colleagues and outside stake holders.
  • Assist with periodic reviews of program effectiveness and reorganize programs as necessary.
  • Prepare and post notices for events and activities.
  • Be in possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Transport participants in the community as assigned.
  • To assist, support and guide participants in all activities of daily living.
  • To assist with meals and snacks as required.
Administrative Duties
  • Maintain accurate records of participants activities, continuously update information.
  • Meet with new participants and complete recreation survey.
  • Provide Management with updates on activities and planning initiatives.
  • Assist with fund raising.
  • Assist with the monthly updates and calendars, including information gathering, layout, design, and typing.
  • To ensurefamilies receive special event invitations, correspondence and email correspondence as appropriate.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all emails and voice messages.
  • Maintain confidentiality standards and practices with regard to all pertinent records to ensure participants’ rights are protected.
  • Attend interdisciplinary meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Prepare agenda, facilitate, record, and distribute minutes of Resident Council meetings and Family Council meetings, forwarding concerns to appropriate staff to address.
  • Attend Family Council Meetings as directed.
  • Collaborate in the organization, purchase, and maintenance of recreational resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning participant information in accordance with PHIA (NS Personal Health Information Act) as well as employee and organizational information.
  • Always conduct oneself in a professional manner to enhance the public image of MMCG.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a Recreation Therapy Degree/ Diploma, or an equivalent experience in the field of recreation supporting persons with different abilities.
  • Interpersonal skills- empathy and supportive and sensitive to people.
  • Leadership skills- good organization and planning skills, creative problem solver, good listening skills, clear oral and written skills.
  • Must be adaptable and flexible to the changing needs of our participants.
  • Must maintain positive relationships with outside partners and stakeholders to support community inclusion for our participants.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and ability to transport residents as required.
  • Aware of the UN convention of Human rights for persons with Disabilities.
  • Knows the importance of Supportive Decision making.
Preferred:
  • Certifications: First Aid/CPR, Behavioral Crisis Intervention Training (MANDT, NVCI)
  • Food Handlers
  • Musical ability an asset.
  • Experience in garden therapy or willingness to learn
