(Please note: Failure to include your references will cause delay in processing your application.)TITLE: Coordinator of African Nova Scotian EducationLOCATION: Central Office - Harbour HouseThe Coordinator, under the direction of the Director of Programs & Student Services, and through regular connection with the African Canadian Services Division of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, shall be responsible for:

  • Coordination and leadership in all aspects of African Nova Scotian and African descent education and services;
  • Support supervision of ANS Student Support Workers;
  • Lead the programming and professional development for ANS Student Support Workers;
  • Work collaboratively to support the programming and professional development of RCH representatives;
  • Collaborating with providers of other Afrocentric resources and supporting the work of those positions provided by other sources;
  • Collaborating with the region’s Program coordinators, consultants, mentors and instructional leaders to advance culturally responsive practices;
  • Advising and assisting the Regional Executive Director and the Director of Programs and Student Services; and participating in decision making with Senior Management to ensure unconscious biases are in-check, and to be the voice on issues related to African Nova Scotian education, students and communities.
  • The Coordinator will also support the implementation of initiatives and strategies which will have the highest impact on African Nova Scotian student success.
  • The Coordinator will have a broad mandate covering students, parents, community groups and staff, and must work closely with Programs and Student Services staff, School Administration, School Advisory Councils, Human Resources, the Coordinator of Mi’kmaw Services & Coordinator of Student Services.
  • The Coordinator will also be responsible for liaising with African Nova Scotian Communities and African Nova Scotian organizations. The expertise and advice provided to the Regional Executive Director and Senior Staff team shall be in the areas of equity, inclusion, student achievement, engagement, and well-being and includes tasks and guidance in such areas as communication, strategic planning, policy development, curriculum, professional development, service delivery and human resources. Accountability and Reporting:
  • The Coordinator African Canadian Education/Services reports directly to the Director of Programs and Student Services, and acts in an advisory capacity to the Regional Executive Director and Senior Management. The position also acts as the representative of the region to the DEECD/African Canadian Services Division.
Qualifications
  • Designated position for an African Nova Scotian person
  • BEd and certification in Nova Scotia (or ability to be certified in Nova Scotia)
  • Masters degree in Education or acceptable equivalent obtained through training or experience
Experience
  • Minimum (5) years successful teaching experience
  • Experience in an educational leadership role or acceptable equivalent obtained through training or experience considered an asset
  • Experience working with African Nova Scotian students, communities, and organizations
  • Excellent knowledge of African Nova Scotian history, culture, and educational issues.
  • Experience with the Program Planning Process and the development of educational plans which promote achievement and success
