Job Description

GENERAL DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS OF LIBRARIANSOVERVIEW OF THE POSITIONThe Librarian is responsible for:- The effective administration and management of the branch library in Young, - Acting upon the direction of the local library board and under the direction of the Wheatland Regional Central Office, - Promoting and co-ordinating library services and programming for all ages in the community- Assist in the development and delivery of programs, services and initiatives at the local branch level.- Acting as secretary to the local library board.ESSENTIAL SKILLS- Good working knowledge of computers- Experience using Microsoft Word and/or other word processing programs.- Good organizational skills — can keep track of daily duties and long-term projects.- Enjoys working with patrons of all ages — displays a friendly, positive and progressive attitude.- Enjoys reading and can interact and give advice to patrons in at least some subject areas.- Promotes community interest and enthusiasm for library services through a progressive attitude.- Responds to local community needs in a timely and efficient manner.- Takes direction well and can accept constructive criticism.- A working knowledge of library practices and procedures- Good oral and written communication skillsREQUIRED DUTIES- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the local library board to fulfill responsibilities as per current regional policies.- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other library employees. - Participate in local library fundraising projects.- Attend local board meetings, acting as secretary. Present a Librarian #39;s report. Record minutes and submit them too Central.- Assist patrons in locating books and if necessary, retrieving them from the shelves.- Build, promote and weed collections of library materials as per Wheatland #39;s expectations.- Keep emails and other pertinent correspondence from Central organized in the binder provided.- Required to attend workshops, conferences and seminars to maintain and/or acquire professional skills.- Keeping the board informed of initiatives and programs (ie deadlines for yearly ordering of books for our collection and funding requests)- Respond promptly to emails and requests from Central and/or patrons.- Complete monthly requests for lost items in a timely fashion.- Organize and promote programs for all ages (ie Wheatland #39;s Summer Reading Program).- Be aware of and respect the rights of patrons as outlined in the privacy act.- Preparing delivery bins for pickup- Complete regular reporting for Central- Participate in community events (Depending on board decisions)- Train assistant and casual librarians on library duties- Create regular content and engage with patrons on social media is OUTLINED BY THE LOCAL BOARD:- Keep the status of your library account in good standing at all times.- Dust shelves and books monthly.- Keep shelves neat and orderly.- Vacuum all carpets on the last shift of the week or more often as needed. (ie increased foot traffic, wet and/or muddy weather)- Dust computers and clean screens on the last shift of the week or more often as needed.- Keep librarian #39;s desk and counter clean and free of clutter. - Regularly check bulletin boards and remove outdated materials.- Practice recycling whenever possible.- Shred papers of a confidential nature.- Change displays regularly according to seasons, celebrations, themes, etc.- Check bathrooms each shift and clean as necessary.- Thoroughly clean bathrooms on the last shift of the week- Empty garbage cans as necessary.- Shovel the outside step and sidewalk as necessary.- Pick-up mail and deliver all bills to the Treasurer for prompt payment.- Assist the board in spring cleaning when required.- Report works orders to the Chairperson, or designate, of the local library board.- Other duties as assigned by the local board.The Young library board is committed to working closely with Wheatland Regional Central Office and as such, requires that its employees strive to reach and maintain these standards. They are encouraged to express concerns, report work orders to the Chairperson, or designate, of the local library board and make suggestions on how to make the library an enjoyable place for patrons of all ages. Employees are also required to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the board. The board is ultimately responsible for any decisions made as to the timeline in implementing any changes to the appearance of the library, its programming and functions.
