Watercraft inspections are part of a larger province-wide AIS Program that includes monitoring, response planning, education campaigns, and policy. The Watercraft Inspections Program is focused primarily along major highways in Alberta and it is mandatory for all vehicles towing watercraft to stop at open inspection stations.RoleWe have an exciting opportunity to support the AIS program during the 2022 inspection season. If you are comfortable approaching new people, can handle pressure well, are able to work outdoors for long hours, and love working with the public, this may be the job for you!As an Inspector, you will be required to thoroughly inspect the interior and exterior of various types of watercraft to look for any presence of AIS. Utilizing your exceptional communication skills, you will interview boaters to determine the risk of introducing AIS in to Alberta’s water bodies. A key role of this position is to educate the public about the threat of AIS, particularly invasive mussels, and provide “Clean Drain Dry” outreach materials to the public aimed at changing Boater behavior and reducing the spread of AIS. You will be required to tow and back up trailers and use a high pressure hot water decontamination unit for cleaning boats.QualificationsA completed high school diploma plus six months of related experience is required. Experience directly related to the competencies and responsibilities indicated in this Job Ad is required. A valid Class 5 driver’s license is also required.Experience conducting maintenance on small equipment, such as pressure washers, and watercraft knowledge gained through boating experience will be considered an asset. Experience with or demonstrated training in aquatic invasive species will be considered an asset. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict and high pressure environments will be considered an asset. Equivalencies will be considered (i.e. Directly related education in lieu of experience will be considered and vice versa).Proof of certification in Standard First Aid and CPR C are required for an offer of employment.Applicants are encouraged to clearly demonstrate the above assets in their resume or cover letter.APS CompetenciesCompetencies are behaviors that are essential to reach our goals in serving Albertans. The ability to work in other stations and under variable environmental conditions is required.DRIVE FOR RESULTS- must be self-motivated and highly organized to work without daily supervision and successfully deliver this component of the AIS program.Salary$22.99 to $28.31 per hourHours of Work : 36.25 hours per weekWage employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.

  • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.

Sites will be assigned according to staff seniority and station preference.Please note that in order to work with the boating public and accommodate high traffic times and seasons, you will be required to work a flexible schedule that includes travel, shift and weekend work, potentially throughout the spring and into late fall.All chosen candidates will be required to successfully complete mandatory training.Length of employment is dependent upon Program budget and the station selected but could be up to May through October 2021.
