Job Description

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the educational needs of approximately 17,000 students in 43 schools. The Division prides itself on providing staff and students with the tools to achieve success by offering dynamic programming, up-to-date resources and practical professional learning opportunities.EIPS is recruiting a temporary part-time Educational Assistant at Bruderheim School and Castle School (Scotford Colony).Bruderheim School is a K-6 school with approximately 120 students, 10 teaching staff and eight support staff. The school is located in Bruderheim, Alta., approximately 48 kilometers north of Sherwood Park, AB. Bruderheim School is filled with responsible students and staff who strive to do their best in all things. Everyone in the school is encouraged to strive for excellence and focus on building character. In order to succeed and be able to develop a positive attitude of being unique, students need to feel secure. The school sets performance expectations for all parents, students and staff and sees community involvement as mutually beneficial and worthwhile for everyone.Castle School is a grades 1-9 school with approximately 25 students, one teacher and one support staff. Castle School is a two-room school located at Scotford Hutterite Colony, approximately 12 kilometers east of Fort Saskatchewan, AB.Commencing October 12, 2021Ending June 28, 202125 hours per week (15 hours per week at BRU & 10 hours per week at CAS), 5 hours per day3 hours per day at Bruderheim School (8:30 am - 11:30 am)2 hours per day at Castle School (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)Open to Internal and External ApplicantsKey Duties/ResponsibilitiesEducational Assistants (EAs) assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. EAs work as members of the school and student support team. EAs either work with a particular special needs student or a group of students within a class or in a special program.The EA provides routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher, an EA assists the student in acquiring the education and skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective, the EA follows an individually prescribed learning program, through team planning and working one-on-one with the student(s). This involves routine recording, basic charting and logging of observations. EAs may provide personal care and additional assistance for students depending on their particular needs.QualificationsEducation and ExperienceHigh School DiplomaEducational Assistant Certificate or comparable education would be an assetFirst Aid certificate would be an assetNon-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an assetCourses related to working with students with special needs would also be an assetMinimum of one-year related experienceDemonstrated Skills and CompetenciesStrong oral and listening communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills combined with tact and diplomacyStrong organizational skills, time management skills and pacing skills to support student schedulingReliability and dependabilityAbility to work effectively as an active team member in cooperation with other team members and studentsComfort and competency working with personal computers and other technologies to support student learningAbility to respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversityAbility to respond appropriately to challenging behaviours of studentsAbility to effectively utilize crisis intervention strategiesAbility to demonstrate flexibility in work assignmentsNote: This position might require lifting and carrying demands that require the ability to bend at the waist, stoop, and twist frequently, the ability to lift between 10 to 50 lbs., the ability to carry, push and pull between 10 to 50 lbs., and the ability to stand, walk and sit frequently.
