The CWD Field Technician distributes remote freezers to local vendors across Alberta and then collects heads of hunter-killed deer from the freezers. They then manage and deliver the heads to the lab for testing.The major responsibilities of a CWD Field Technician include:

  • Initial program setup: delivering and setting up collection freezers at various vendor locations, contacting road maintenance contractors, distributing CWD program information
  • Monitoring freezers: collecting, verifying species, sex and age from collected samples, providing initial field data record for all samples collected; collecting samples from road killed deer; and timely head collection from freezers.
  • Sample Delivery: photocopying green CWD tags, delivering tags and samples to testing labs (Edmonton, Airdrie and Lethbridge)
  • Program Shut Down: Retrieving, cleaning, and properly storing freezers; completing inventory check list.
Challenges in this position include long periods of driving (at times in inclement weather), organizing, tracking, and delivering large numbers of heavy frozen incoming heads, communicating goals of the program to hunters, and being efficient while responsive to unanticipated aspects of winter field activities. This position will also require working a modified work week to accommodate weekend hunting.Seven positions are available and individuals will be based in local urban centres adjacent to the assigned geographic work area. Residence and meals will be compensated by the CWD program for the duration of the work term.QualificationsEducational requirements:
  • High School Diploma, and 1 year of related conservation and/or driving experience
Additional requirements:
  • Valid class 5 drivers license
  • Driver’s abstract with less than 3 demerits
Assets:
  • Winter driving experience, preference for defensive driving
  • Experience using tow trailers and large pick up trucks
  • Good physical condition and able to lift at least 50lbs
  • Experience with hunting large game or working with large domestic animals in the agricultural industry

  • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
