Job DescriptionA Day in the Life:PRT is looking for a seasonal Seed Orchard Technician to work at the PRT Armstrong Nursery in Armstrong, BC.Under the direction of the Operations Manager the Seed Orchard Technician (SOT) is responsible for organizing and supervising the day-to-day activities in the orchards in order to maximize the production of high-quality seed from the orchard trees while upholding PRT’s safety and environmental practices and policies. The position is non-continuous (seasonal) and during the off season, the SOT is expected to assist and take part in other nursery work which may include supervisor, quality assurance or machine operator duties. No shift work required. Candidates should have a desire and keenness to learn about the seed orchard activities, keep accurate records, work independently and efficiently. Candidates may be interviewed and tested to assess their abilities and qualifications for this position.Key Accountabilities of the Seed Orchard Technician are:

  • Collect data on orchard inventories and maps
  • Collect scion material and graft onto root stock
  • Conduct pollen and cone inventories
  • Fertilize, prune and irrigate orchard trees
  • Assess seed embryo development
  • Plan and direct cone pick operations
  • Assist in winterizing irrigation system
  • Operate and maintain orchard equipment
  • Assist in developing OTIP funding proposals
  • Register seed lots on SPAR
  • Attend ITAC and BCSOC annual meetings
  • Use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for pest monitoring
  • Support innovation and continuous improvement
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork at all levels
  • Set targets (i.e., production, timelines) and evaluate achievement
About the team:The Seed Orchard Technician will be part of a team lead by the Operations Manager. This position is in the breathtaking Okanagan Valley, Armstrong, BC. This beautiful location offers activities and magnificent scenery all year long!
