Job Description

Are you an avid outdoor lover who is looking for one of a kind job experience and have an interest in resource management If so, Quetico Provincial Park wants you to join their dynamic team.Quetico Provincial Park is a major wilderness park. It is one of Ontarios premier wilderness canoeing areas with visitation averaging over 120,000 camper nights annually. To the south, the park is approximately 50% bordered by the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness located in Minnesota, U.S.A.Within the interior of the park there are two remote ranger stations accessible only by water. Communication for emergencies is by radio or satellite phone. Supplies are brought in by aircraft once a week. Visitation averages 12,000 to 34,000 camper nights annually per station. 95% of the park visitors are from the U.S.A. The stations function as emergency stations for their assigned areas of the park interior.What can I expect to do in this roleIn this role,

  • You will be working with limited direct supervision due to the remoteness of the work location.
  • You will be operating and maintaining a remote Park Interior Wilderness Ranger Station, providing emergency and first aid services, as well as clerical and information services, grounds maintenance, operate a small park store and issue park permits.

  • You will be required to travel into Minnesota (USA) and then take boat transportation through the superior national forest to reach your work location in the Backcountry of Quetico Provincial Park along the Canada/USA border.
  • You will be provided off the grid living accommodations at the remote entry station.
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • You must possess a valid G licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid drivers licence upon being hired.
  • You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Small Drinking Water Operators Certificate.
  • You have the ability to obtain valid CPR and Emergency First Aid Certificate.
  • You have the ability to obtain a valid Restricted Radio-Telephone Operators certificate.
  • You have the ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.
  • You have the ability to cross the border into the USA in order to travel to your work location in southern Quetico.
Technical expertise:
  • You possess working knowledge of overall park operations and assist in the development of new mechanical systems.
  • You have the ability to conduct maintenance safely of grounds, buildings, and equipment, and to use machinery and tools.
  • You possess basic mathematical skills to perform cash handling duties as well as conduct maintenance and basic construction work.
  • You have a good understanding of and interest in resource management principles and techniques.
  • You are knowledgeable of and have the ability to operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to a variety of light powered equipment.
  • You have demonstrated experience in safe canoe tripping, camping, navigation and practices/techniques of outdoor living.
  • You have knowledge of and the ability to operate, maintain and learn the hydro-electric turbine water system, water treatment systems, composting toilet system and hydro-electric and gas generating electrical systems;
Analytical and Organizational Skills
  • You follow instructions and seek clarification, as required.
  • You pay close attention to detail, priorities and record information accurately and meet deadlines.
  • You have organizational skills and proven ability to complete projects within acceptable timeframes and deal with competing demands.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You apply your verbal and written communication skills to communicate information related to programs, prepare a variety of documents, and respond to public and/or internal inquiries by phone, email, and in-person.
  • You have interpersonal and customer service skills to liaise with clients, staff and park visitors.
  • You have demonstrated ability to work independently and follow and carry out instructions.
  • You have the ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and directives such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and those regulations made under the act that apply to the workplace and work being performed.
Computer proficiency:
  • You have the knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment.
  • You are proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
