Job Description

School Age Care Worker OpportunityParkgate Community Services SocietyWho We Are:With a vision of a vibrant, connected community, Parkgate Society (PS) creates opportunities for people in our community to live life better. We support this vision through the development of a unique and diverse blend of accessible low-cost and no-cost programs and services, created in direct response to community needs; primarily serving children, youth, families, and seniors.Our dedicated and welcoming staff team, along with our many active volunteers, including our Board of Directors, are all committed to making Parkgate Society a welcoming and inclusive community services organization.Opportunity:In collaboration with the Child Care team and under the direction of the School Age Care Program Supervisor, school age care workers actively engage and supervise children aged 5-12 years old. Each worker is responsible for ensuring the children’s safety and well-being while cultivating an inclusive, welcoming, and stimulating environment.Guided by the goals and philosophy of the Parkgate Child Care Centre, and aligned with the vision, mission and values of Parkgate Society, the team works collaboratively, including with the families and the community. The team plans and implements age-appropriate activities, using a variety of approaches and an EDI lens.Key Responsibilities (a full description will be provided to candidates selected to interview):

  • Plans, implements and assesses developmentally appropriate activities and experiences to reflect Parkgate Society Child Care Program philosophy.
  • Guides children’s behaviour in ways that promote a positive self-concept.
  • Ensures the children’s environment is healthy and safe.
  • Consistently practices respectful, transparent, and constructive communication with families, coworkers and children.
  • Contributes to the ongoing efficient and professional operation of the School Age Care Program.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Sound knowledge of the care and guidance needed to effectively promote and support the healthy social and personal development of school age children, including those with special needs.
  • Sound knowledge of applicable policies, regulations, and files governing the work to be performed.
  • Ability to exercise patience and consistency in behaviour management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with families, children, staff, and where appropriate, community resources.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting; be well organized, flexible, and able to adapt to new situations.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to pursue and participate in ongoing professional development by attending courses and workshops as requested or identified that are related to working with children or teens, families and/or caregivers.
  • An understanding of EDI principles.
Other Requirements:
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate.
  • Clear Criminal Records Check for Vulnerable Persons.
  • Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Be able to effectively participateamp; supervise in both indooramp; outdoor activities with active school age children.
  • School Age Care Certificate or 20 hours Responsible Adult Training.
  • Ideally, at least three (3) months experience working in a similar role.
Contract Details:
  • We are located in beautiful North Vancouver; positions are open currently at both Parkgate Community Centre and the Seymour Youth Centre.
  • This is a seasonal position, based on 12-30 hours per week for September 2024 through to the end of June 2025.
  • Vacation is paid as a % of wages earned.
