  • Investment Attraction: support the Town’s investment attraction initiatives by researching available sites, working with Planning & Development to ensure appropriate zoning/designation, develop and lead investment presentations and familiarization tours.
  • Business Retention and Expansion: support the Town’s business retention and expansion initiatives by researching available industrial and commercial units / properties, monitoring local business expansions, and communicating market trends (e.g. lease rates, vacancy rates, etc.).
  • Enhanced Customer and Business Support: support an enhanced customer and business support process for non-residential inquiries and development applications to ensure an effective and efficient process for employment generating inquires.
  • Economic Analysis: conduct economic analysis to support the Town’s economic development initiatives including analysis of demographic trends, labour markets, sector analysis and base analysis.
  • Marketing and Promotions: administer the Town’s economic development marketing and promotions initiatives which includes sharing and running the Town’s economic development Twitter account (@WhitbyEcDev), providing economic development content for the Town’s corporate LinkedIn, and updating marketing resources such as quick facts, success stories and community profile.
  • Real Estate Research: administer and manage the Town’s commercial and industrial real-estate database which includes monitoring active listings, connecting with local real-estate professionals and maintaining an active database of available listings in Whitby.
  • Strategic Initiatives: support the Town’s strategic initiatives which can include providing strategic advice for news interviews, managing relationships with stakeholders and supporting the implementation of the economic development strategy.
This role is multi-disciplinary and requires the ability to work independently, as part of the Economic Development Team, in collaboration with internal departments, with local municipalities and the Region of Durham, as well as with a number of external organizations/associations.What You Bring To Our TeamAs the successful applicant, you must possess:
  • University Degree in Economics, Economic Development, Business, Planning or related discipline.
  • Experience working with businesses and marketing practices.
  • Economic Development (Ec.D.) Professional Designation or actively pursuing certification would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to quickly draw conclusions, present business alternatives and recommendations, priority and goal setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Mathematical skills, financial/accounting skills.
  • Economic acumen and understanding (e.g. market dynamics, labour markets, impact analysis, base analysis, etc.) marketing and promotion tactics, business concepts, strategic planning, real-estate understanding.
  • Ability to persuade and negotiate. Active listening skills.
  • Ability to capture and interpret key issues, trends and opportunities for economic analysis and decision-making.
