Job Description

MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR - FT (HILLCREST PLACE)Extendicare is a leading provider of care and services for seniors throughout Canada. Our qualified and highly trained workforce of 23,700 team members are united by a dedication to quality care and by our vision of being the best provider of senior care and services in CanadaUnder the direction of the Support Services Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor performs all Preventive Maintenance operations and procedures as described in the Extendicare Preventive Maintenance Manual including but not limited to carrying out repairs; checking the operation of mechanical equipment; inspecting emergency alarm and lighting systems; completing monthly maintenance report; carrying out necessary grounds work and performing caretaker and maintenance duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read and write English as well as to understand verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined.
  • Possesses valid Class 5 Power Engineer’s certificate or technical training in building maintenance. Operator B certificate or journeyman status in carpentry, electrical or plumbing an asset. Possesses sufficient practical experience to satisfactorily perform the responsibilities of the position. Extensive knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and building system with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Available for emergency call-back when necessary.
  • Demonstrates concern and interest in providing a safe and attractive environment for residents and staff.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, direct and evaluate the work of others.
  • Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently to coordinate and complete assignments correctly and on a timely basis.
  • Ability to communicate with other staff, residents, families and the public.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plans work schedule, directs and supervises the maintenance staff so as to ensure that Extendicare’s standards and procedures, as outlined in the Preventive Maintenance Manual are met.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates Maintenance Department staff. Recommends and initiates corrective discipline subject to discussion with Manager and in accordance with Company procedures.
  • Establishes and implements annual goals and objectives for the Maintenance Department in accordance with facility goals and objectives.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on building and equipment as described in the Extendicare Preventive Maintenance Manual and documents, as required, by the program. Prepares and maintains necessary reports and records.
  • Carries out repairs to malfunctioning equipment, if possible, or takes specific action to have problem, rectified.
  • Supervises or performs maintenance and repair tasks involving plumbing and electrical, heating and ventilation systems, as well as to the building in general.
  • Practices and promotes energy conservation.
  • Inspects residents’ appliances on admission and on a routine basis, maintaining records of same.
  • Regularly inspects building emergency and safety systems in accordance with government regulations and Extendicare policies and records these inspections as required.
  • Completes other maintenance reports and monitors departmental expenditures to remain within budget.
  • Supervises necessary grounds work such as lawn mowing and watering, snow removal and parking lot and sidewalk maintenance.
  • Supervises or makes general repairs such as: touch-up plastering and painting, replacing tile and other similar work to building.
  • Assists other departments in moving furniture, equipment and supplies, as requested.
  • Follows manufacturer’s instructions in the operation and use of all equipment and chemicals.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of routine maintenance supplies, tools, and spare parts in accordance with budgetary guidelines.
  • Coordinates and supervises the work of local tradesmen on the premises, as necessary.
  • Remains knowledgeable of current codes and regulations pertaining to the maintenance of the facility.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff, as required, including the ongoing instruction and supervision of all Maintenance staff.
  • Participates in evaluating care and/or services provided by the Maintenance Department to residents under the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Reports unsafe and hazardous working conditions and any equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Is alert to potential health and safety hazards and takes appropriate action.
  • Respects residents’ rights to dignity and privacy and performs duties in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Adheres to “Standards of Employee Conduct,” “Commitment to Residents”, “Bill of Rights”, and “Extendicare Quality Care Standards.”
  • Performs all duties in accordance with written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility and the Maintenance Department.
  • Works closely and cooperates with other staff and residents. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary care conferences, committees and meetings as required.
  • Knowledgeable of facility procedures for fire, environmental safety, infection control and Asbestos Management.
  • Responsible for development and upgrading of his/her knowledge and skills. Attends conferences and in-service sessions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
